Travelers who are teetotal, trying to minimise the alcohol intake or simply not in the mood for booze, do not need to miss out on the cocktail in hand, toes in the sand island vibes that Bali has to offer.
Whether sober curious or simply fancying something a little different, Bali’s ever-expanding cocktail menus are worth exploring.
While the principle of being sober curious has been around for years, in late 2023 and early 2024 this movement gained plenty of new followers.
The sober curious community is made up of individuals who wish to become more mindful of their alcohol intake, but without the pressure or commitment of complete abstinence.
Bali is home to some of the most trendy and popular bars, cafes and clubs in the world, and with the sober curious movement picking up speed and with many millions of Indonesian people abstaining from alcohol on religious grounds, the island is yet again primed to be a pioneer in an emerging food and beverage trend.
Mocktails, as the name suggests, are cocktails without the booze, AKA a virgin. Sometimes appearing on menus as refreshers or elixirs, these drinks have been made with as much consideration for flavor, fizz, and feel as Bali’s top boozy tipples.
Bali’s foodie scene has always got something new to share. When it comes to mocktails, this is no exception. With so many botanicals, herbs, spices, and tropical fruits all grown on the island and around the archipelago, mocktails can be a gateway to a whole new world of sensations.
With mocktails appearing on so many menus in Bali, it’s hard to know where to start. A great introduction to the mocktail menu of dreams can be sought at Zest Ubud. This plant-forward restaurant has always had a contentious edge when it comes to both flavor, diner’s experience, and the wider world.
Top picks include Zest’s Spicy Cucumber Squash and the Bluevender. The Spicy Cucumber Squash features cucumber, lemongrass, the perfect hint of chill, apple juice, and lime juice.
For something colourful and floral then the Bluevender should be your go-to, featuring blueberry, lavender, lemon juice, butterfly pea flower and soda water.
For super healthy, high-vibe food and drinks, Ubud really is the place to be. If you’re looking for a seriously good time day or night in Ubud, it has to be Soulshine Bali.
The restaurant and day club offer one of the most magic sunsets in Ubud, and the team here is all so genuinely welcoming that it might just bring a tear to your eye.
The Ginger, Mint and Lime Juice is a zinger to get you feeling refreshed and uplifted for a day of play at Soulshine.
If you’re a traveler who is opting to decline the booze while in Bali’s most famous party hot spots, never fear.
We’ve got you covered. Canggu is probably the party capital of Bali right now, with Seminyak and Uluwatu coming in second place, with each offering a slightly different vibe.
The world’s biggest beach club can be found in Canggu, Atlas Beach Fest. The beach club recently hit headlines for being home to the world’s most expensive nasi goreng, Indonesian fried rice.
Thankfully, the mocktail options are far more affordable. With mocktail slushies available for IDR 110,000 guests can sip and unwind all day long at Atlas.
The Red Explosion is a simple but moorish drink featuring strawberry juice, lemon juice and a good slash of sugar syrup.
The Summer Madness features mango juice, lemon juice and sugar syrup for a more tropical feel.
Over in swanky Seminyak the mocktail menus are as impressive as ever. For a magical evening out be sure to swing by The Iron Fairies for their Lychee Mint Bubbles featuring sweet lychee, mint, melon syrup, lemon juice and lemonade.
For something a little different try the Tropical Smash, featuring pineapple, rosemary, citrus, vanilla syrup and soda.
Uluwatu and Ungasan hottest beach clubs and venues all have mocktail menus too. Take a look at Sundays Beach Club for example, the Ungasan Refresher features apple, lemon, cucumber and soda, and the Passion Smash includes passionfruit, lemon, chamomile tea and sprite.
