An official from the Covid-19 Handling Task Force has admitted that most quarantine facilities in Denpasar have almost reached their maximum capacity.
The Spokesman of Denpasar Covid-19 Handling Task Force, I Dewa Gede Rai, confirmed that the surge in Covid-19 transmission over the last few weeks had caused most appointed quarantine facilities in Denpasar to near full capacity.
“Our quarantine facilities in Denpasar has reached 90 percent of their capacity today,” Gede Rai said on Wednesday (9/2). He also explained that Denpasar recorded 986 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday alone.
However, Gede Rai clarified that most active Covid-19 cases in Denpasar are patients with mild symptoms. They also recorded a good amount of recoveries.
Regardless, the officials plan to appoint several hotels within the city as additional quarantine facilities.
Several other regions such as Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan face similar challenges, as Omicron cases continue to surge in those areas.
According to data from Bali provincial government, a total of 2,556 new Covid-19 cases were confirmed on Wednesday (9/2), causing the government to increase restrictions.

So….let me understand this. Domestic travel tourism flights from Indonesia mainland is up, tourist hotel bookings are seriously down, retail and restaurant receipts are way off, and quarantine hotels and facilities are full? Doesn’t add up. Are travelers from Java flying in only to book into quarantine?

Breakthrough infections can occur even with people who have been vaccinated and boosted.
Other countries are also facing a similar problem regardless of the recent relaxed restrictions. Indonesia with an average vaccination rate has managed to control the pandemic with rigid restrictions. Countries with more available vaccination resources have an uphill battle to face with misinformation and conspiracy theories flowing into the social media and mainstream public. Stubborn people still refused to be vaccinated.
An expectation that Covid-19 will become endemic essentially means that the pandemic will not end with virus disappearing; instead enough people will gain immune protection from vaccination and from natural infection. There will be less transmission and much less Covid-19 related hospitalization and death related to Covid-19 even if the virus continues to mutate. That optimistic view remains an open debate among medical experts.
