Bali is a travel destination that offers something for everyone.

From the abundant resorts along the southern coast to the off-the-beaten-path villages of the North West, Bali is an island that remains one of the most in-demand travel destinations in the world.

New survey results shared by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economies reveal the top reasons why tourists travel to Bali.

Speaking from Denpasar, Minister Sandiaga Uno outlines the top three factors that encourage tourists to visit a destination, and some people have found the results surprising.

Minster Uno said “From the data we obtained, it turns out that tourist attractions in 2023 are supported by three choices. The first is excellence and attractiveness of local culture.”

He explained that the second reason is the availability of ‘culinary delights’ followed by the provision of green tourism offerings.

Data showed that sustainable tourism options were a top priority for domestic tourists.

Minster Uno continued, “The data shows that the attractiveness of culinary tourism reaches more than 40% percent. Tourists choose a destination because of its culinary tourism. The third is sustainable or green tourism.”

Since Bali is known to many as a destination for partying or enjoying a classic beachside vacation, it is encouraging for tourism businesses on the island to have it confirmed that culture, cuisine, and sustainability are all deciding factors for tourists planning their visits to the island.

So, what are the top cultural, food, and sustainable tourism activities in Bali right now?

Tourists could spend a lifetime immersing in Balinese culture and still only scratch the surface. The rich heritage of the island is something visitors must experience in as many ways as possible during their vacation.

One of the top cultural experiences in Bali is to visit Pura Tirta Empul, just outside of Ubud, for a traditional Melukat water blessing ceremony.

No trip to Bali would be complete without attending a traditional cultural show. The most famous cultural performance in Bali is the firry Kecak, which is performed every night at Uluwatu Temple.

For those not visiting Uluwatu during their holiday there are plenty more places to experience a Kecak show.

There are nightly performances of both the Kecak and the Barong dance in Ubud, and many of the big resorts also showcase private performances for guests.

To really get a deeper understanding of Balinese culture a visit to Besakh Temple is essential. Known as the Mother Temple, Besakih Temple sits on the slopes of the sacred Mount Agung.

A guided tour of the temple takes visitors on an immersive journey into the history and spirituality of the island.

Cultural landmarks like Tanah Lot Temple, the GWK Cultural Park, Ubud Palace, the waterfalls of Munduk and the Telallagang Rice Terraces have also been noted by tourists as top cultural reasons to visit the Island of the Gods.

Unmissable restaurants that showcase the finest Balinese and Indonesian cuisine on the island include Murni’s Warung in Ubud, Art Cafe Bumbu Bali in Nusa Dua, and Ijen Restaurant at Desa Potato Head in Seminyak.

Merah Putih in Seminyak is uttering breathtaking. Serving up modern takes on classic Indonesian cuisine, the stylish and super sustainable restaurant is getting nothing but rave reviews.

Imagine if you had a resource like gold. But you didn't have to dig it up. Imagine it came on an aeroplane to visit you . Not once but over 5 million times a year. Imagine all you have to do is be kind to the gold and it just keeps coming more and more in abundance. But then a leader in the community started complaining that not all the gold was good and he only wanted the best gold to come. He banned the gold from going to the mountains and volcanos. He sent some off the gold away. He then decided charge taxes on the gold, every time it arrived. One day due to all the bad decisions the gold decided to not return and went to visit a different kingdom.
