Sanur is Bali’s oldest tourism resort. The coastal hotspot has had many lives and remains one of the most popular destinations on the island.
However, as the destination has grown, the surrounding infrastructure, especially for transportation and parking, hasn’t quite kept up with increasing demand, resulting in traffic congestion issues and parking problems.

The Denpasar City Government and the Sanur Traditional Village are working together to create sustainable and impactful solutions to Sanur’s traffic congestion and parking issues.
A new six-storey hydraulic parking lot has been built at Sanur’s Bangsal Beach to help mitigate parking problems in the area.
There are many reasons why traffic congestion builds up in Sanur, but one issue that, in theory, could be resolved easily is the problem of cars and motorcycles parked at the side of busy streets, blocking traffic from flowing freely.
The new hydraulic parking lot is set to resolve some of the issues in the tourism village.
The situation hasn’t been all smooth sailing, however. The new multi-storey hydraulic parking lot is now in its soft-launch trial phase, but Sanur Traditional Village is finding it hard to staff the site.
Speaking to reporters, Sanur Traditional Village Head Ida Bagus Sudiraharja explained, “It’s still a trial run, not yet fully operational. There are quite a lot of visitors, but the workforce isn’t ready yet, so visitors tend to rush and abandon their motorcycles.”
He noted that very few young people have been showing interest in the role of parking attendant, which is making it hard to fully staff the site.
Due to the parking system operation, the site depends on sufficient staffing to work effectively. Sudiraharja explained, “Visitors will simply park their motorcycles, and parking attendants will manage the on and off of them. Therefore, we will coordinate further with vendors to assist with staffing.”
The parking tariff is currently priced at IDR 2,000 per motorcycle, which is on par with all other parking areas in Sanur and tourism resorts around Bali. The new hydraulic parking lot can accommodate 600 motorcycles.
The new parking project and building is a collaboration between the Sanur Traditional Village and a Jakarta-based vendor. It is serving as a pilot project in Bali; if it proves to be a viable solution to parking issues in congested areas of Bali, especially in tourism resort areas, more of these kinds of parking lots could be built.
The management agreement is in place for 10 years, and comes with a profit-sharing system, which is positioned at 30% for the Sanur Traditional Village and 70% for the vendor.

This is not the first solution to be implemented in Sanur to help keep tourists moving freely on vacation and not stuck in traffic.
Last year, Sanur Traditional Village trialled a new electric shuttle bus service that has now become a permanent feature of the tourism resort.

The shuttle bus service currently operates from 6 am to 10 pm, with the last service setting off on the route at 9 pm. Each bus can carry 10-12 passengers.
The route starts at Sanur Tourism Junior High School (SMP), stopping at Sanur Sindu Market, Icon Mall, the Public Electric Vehicle Charging Station (SPKLU) at Lake Poso, and onward to Mertasari Beach Parking.
The service launched with six buses operating the service, and is soon set to increase to twelve to ensure that there are sufficient seats for all who wish to use the service.

The long-term mission is to create pockets of parking in Sanur that correspond to the electric shuttle bus service and other public transportation in the area to create a park-and-ride style network for tourists, local community members, and local staff who travel into Sanur each day for work.
