The long-anticipated Bali Maritime Tourism Hub is nearly ready to open its doors formally.
The major maritime redevelopment project in Bali’s Tanjung Benoa has transformed the harbor area into Indonesia’s first international-standard cruise ship pier. The new marina area is set to become the face of Bali’s luxury marine tourism industry.

The new Bali Maritime Tourism Hub has been years in the making. Speaking at the Indonesian Maritime Week 2025 event in Jakarta, the Director General of Marine Transportation Ministry of Transportation Antoni Arif Priadi revealed that the new Bali Benoa Marina within the Bali Maritime Tourism Hub is completed.
Priadi told reporters “Pelindo has prepared the Benoa Port as a Maritime Tourism Bub. Bali maritime tourism hub BMTH and now it is finished and all passenger cruise ships have started, not passenger but the cruise has started many who have come to Benoa and the facilities are indeed international standard.”
The soft opening of the Bali Maritime Tourism Hub is set for October 2025. The new Bali Benoa Marina can accommodate dozens of luxury yachts, and with an investment of nearly IDR 900 billion, no expense has been spared in the development process.
Priadi also gave insights as to the agency’s next big projects which will help level up marine transportation nationwide. He revealed “[As for] Makassar currently the logistics that was delivered was a bit costly because the goods from the east usually enter Jakarta or Surabaya first before being exported. Well, we are trying to develop Makassar because today Makassar can already be 2 million per ton.”
He concluded,” So that the goods that want to go out to China and so on are no longer through Jakarta but directly from East Indonesia to Makassar directly upwards will cut a lot of time and of course, the cost will definitely go down, that’s all.”
As Bali prepares to welcome the formal opening of the Bali Maritime Tourism Hub, the Denpasar City Tourism Office, which oversees all tourism activities in resort areas such as Tanjung Benoa and Sanur, has just launched a new tourism promotion campaign in the area.
Late last month the Head of the Denpasar Tourism Office, Ni Luh Putu Riyastiti, hosted the launch of the new initiative aboard the Phinisi Cruise ship in Benoa Harbour.
Riyastiti and her teams want to promote Denpasar’s incredible marine tourism potential to a new demographic of international and domestic tourists.
Holidaymakers and travelers looking to experience the best of Bali’s underwater adventures and ocean expeditions would be wise to check out what’s on offer in Denpasar’s top tourism resorts; Sanur, Benoa, and Serangan Island to name a few.

Riyastiti feels that promoting more of Denpasar’s maritime tourism potential can also help preserve and protect the environment.
She shared, “Behind this potential is a big responsibility, namely maintaining marine sustainability, protecting coastal ecosystems, and ensuring that every development step is carried out in accordance with the principle of sustainability.”
Adding “This concept encourages us not only to ensure that the impact of tourism is not damaging but to be able to repair and restore the ecosystem and the quality of life of local communities.”

Not only Denpasar but Badung Regency is leveling up its maritime tourism offering. In a bid to tackle the area’s rising issue with traffic congestion, Badung Regency leaders, who oversee tourism hotspots like Canggu, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, and Uluwatu, are working to develop more sea taxi routes.

Earlier this week, the Secretary of Badung, Ida Bagus Surya Suamba, confirmed the development of the new Canggu-Cemagi Boat Terminal. Set to be operational in 2026, the terminal will offer fast boat shuttle services between Bali Airport and Canggu, Bali’s hottest tourism resort.

All these smaller Mickey Mouse fast boats between Bali and Nusa Penida and Lombok need to be replaced with larger vessels suitable for the rough sea conditions in the Lombok Strait. How many incidents and accidents more before people wake up to the risk?

Marine hub? Why not focus on safety for the existing boat service in Bali?
Yesterday a passenger fast boat ("The Tanis") with 89 passengers capsized a few meters from shore at Tanjung Sanghyang Port, Lembongan, Nusa Penida with passengers onboard. Pure luck nobody got trapped inside and drowned.
This time the locals blame "big waves".
I suspect they wanted to back out the vessel (stern first) in the wave breaking zone. And so water could enter over the low transom and fill the huge passenger cabin. How could this dangerous scenario not be anticipated??
These people are morons not following safe operating procedures for and should not be allowed to operate passenger boats. There need to be changes in how these boats are docked/un-docked when exposed to waves.
