A local from Jembrana, Wayan Sudana (53) is currently under trial facing a sentence of 1 year imprisonment after he purchased a baby deer, a protected animal in Indonesia, with intentions to resell for profit.

During the hearing on Thursday (14/1), Sudana admitted to purchasing the deer for USD 28.5 (IDR$400,000) from an unknown man on November 6th, 2020.
“The man initially asked for more money but I bargained until he gave me a discount,” said Sudana.
He then brought home the deer, intending to sell it for profit in the black market.

As Sudana made attempts to find a buyer online, his illegal activity was detected by officers.
Police arrived at the suspect’s residence for interrogation.
When asked for legal documents required to own a protected animal, Sudana admitted he did not have a permit.

According to the District Attorney Jembrana, I Gede Gatot Hariawan, Sudana violated Article 40 Number 4 and Article 21 Number 5 Indonesian Constitution Year 1990 relating to Natural Resources and Ecosystems
He could face 1 year imprisonment and a fine of USD$3563 (IDR50 million).
Sudana is not being detained during the trial as the sentence is below 5 years imprisonment.
