Local Community Bid To Become New Management At Bali Tourist Beach

The local community, which manages part of the popular tourist resort of German Beach in south Bali, hopes that the provincial government will hand over more responsibility for the area.

The German Beach Management team wants to have more say over how the tourist beach is maintained and developed.

Speaking to reporters, Wayan Sudi, who is part of the German Beach Management Team, explained, “If it is handed over to the traditional village as the [main] manager of German Beach, we can make maximum use of it.”

The German Beach Management team has been in discussions with politicians from the Badung Regency Government, including ex-Governor of Bali Made Mangku Pastika. 

German Beach got its name during the 1960s when the first big construction of Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport was underway.

Due to its close proximity to Bali Airport, many of the international construction team, who hailed from Germany, used to hang out there when not working on site.

In recent years, work has been undertaken to help give German Beach, often referred to by its Indonesian name, Pantai Jerman, to give the area a freshen-up.

In 2022, the incredible Triratna Amreta Bhuwana statue was unveiled and has become a major attraction for the stretch of the coast. 

German Beach is also well known for being a super family-friendly beach. With a shallow shoreline, rarely hit by big waves, and plenty of space for everyone, German Beach is a great destination for young families seeking an affordable getaway in the sun.

The fact that it takes just 15 minutes to drive from Bali Airport to German Beach makes it a particularly appealing option for young families wishing to minimize travel time with little ones once they touch down on the Island of the Gods.

Sudi told reporters that if the Traditional Village would be given total management responsibility of the beach the resort would be cleaned up even more.

Some construction boards are still in place following a series of small building projects funded by the local government.

The Traditional Village are concerned this could make the beach area look run down despite the opposite being true; everything is shiny and new!

Wayan Tegeg, who is also part of the German Beach Management Team, explained that the area has leveled up in many ways over the last couple of years.

With the support of Bank BPD Bali, beachfront vendors can now take digital payments to save tourists carrying cash on the beach.

Tegeg also confirmed that university students are studying German Beach. He shared, “German Beach is also currently being studied by one of the universities in Bali as a family-friendly beach.”

Ex-Governor Pastika told reporters, “The tourism prospects for the German Coast must continue to be maintained. Apart from a clean and shady beach area, the sea waves are very good. Here, it is a good combination of natural beauty and the creativity of human resources.”

He agrees that the traditional village should be handed over full management of the beach.
