Indonesia’s Potential For World-Class Regenerative Tourism Starts In Bali

The Indonesian Government has announced that it will be focusing on developing more regenerative tourism in the region.

With the country’s flagship travel destination, Bali, grappling with the risks of overtourism and the impacts of mass tourism in concentrated areas, many feel a shift to regenerative tourism cannot come a moment too soon.

Speaking at a press conference in Jakarta, the Deputy for Marketing at the Ministry of Tourism, Ni Made Ayu Marthini, shared that the government is moving to focus on promoting regenerative tourism. Regenerative tourism is an approach that prioritizes environmental restoration and empowering local communities; essentially ensuring that tourism has a net positive impact wherever it is present.

Marthini told reporters, “We remain focused on communicating Indonesia’s added value, such as its cultural diversity, natural beauty, and quality services, with a greater focus on regenerative tourism.”

She spoke of Wonderful Indonesia’s #KeepTheWonder campaign that was launched in 2024 to encourage both domestic and international tourists to make positive contributions to environmental and cultural restoration and preservation efforts.

Moving forward as part of efforts to promote Indonesian tourism, the Ministry of Tourism is communicating with travel agents worldwide and offering incentives and support for those who give their backing to the regenerative tourism movement. Marthini added, “We need to maintain good cooperation and relationships with travel agents and tour operators from all over the world.”

International tourists can expect to see more promotion of all of Indonesia’s top destinations, including Bali, through their local travel agents and even through targeted marketing on social media. Marthini confirmed that the Wonderful Indonesia team is busy conducting promotional activities in Germany and Italy last month and just this week held business meetings in Ipoh, Penang, and Kuala Lumpur.

In August, sales missions for Indonesian tourism services will be held in Korea and China, and tourism promotional activities will be held in India, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

All this is good news for international tourists who will soon be able to snap up even better travel deals to top Indonesian destinations like Bali, but also engage in more regenerative tourism activities which are often felt to be more meaningful and authentic travel experiences.

Marthini told reporter,s “Our official social media channels are also actively providing the latest information on conditions in Indonesia, including activities, festivals, and attractive promotions that could be key considerations for tourists.”

She added,”With this adaptive and strategic approach, we hope Indonesia can become the top choice for global travelers seeking safe, diverse, and memorable destinations in Southeast Asia.”

Marthini also revealed that the government is working to increase the frequency and routes of direct flights from key tourism market countries to Indonesia.

She reiterated that the Ministry of Tourism is always in regular contact with the relevant supporting agencies and ministries to ensure safety for all tourists and those in the travel sector.
