Indonesia’s national tourism board, Wonderful Indonesia, has just launched a revolutionary new AI platform that will help tourists plan even more exciting adventures in Bali and around the country.
The new platform, named Meticulous Artificial Intelligence of Indonesia, or MaiA, will help thousands of tourists plan more meaningful vacations across the archipelago.

Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, has officially launched the new Meticulous Artificial Intelligence of Indonesia platform, which will be known as MaiA.
The AI platform, powered by Google’s Gemini, has been designed to improve the quality of Indonesia’s tourism experiences by providing adaptive, intelligent and tourist-focused technology.
MaiA, which can be used as a chatbot on the official Indonesia tourism site, is set to be a travel companion for tourists and travellers planning upcoming trips across Bali.
MaiA has been designed to promote Indonesia’s most popular destinations and the super priority destinations known as the five new Balis.
These are Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Borobudur in Central Java, Mandalika in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara Province, Likupang in North Sulawesi, and Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara.
The AI has also been trained to help promote the focus areas of the Ministry of Tourism, which are gastronomy, maritime and wellness tourism, and in Bali specifically, the lesser visited areas of the province such as north and west Bali.
Speaking at the launch of MaiA, Minister Wardhana shared, “Let’s welcome MaiA together as a step forward towards a more adaptive, competitive, and world-class future for Indonesian tourism.”
She added “The launch of MaiA is the actual implementation of the government’s commitment to establishing a smart, inclusive, and sustainable tourism ecosystem.” Noting “this is our step toward shaping tourism that is not only beautiful to behold, but also intelligent and inclusive for all.”
The Ministry of Tourism’s AI Development Lead, Pradhana HS, added “Whatever questions we have about Indonesian tourism, MaiA will answer them.” The service is set to help level up the way both domestic and international tourists plan their trips around the country.
Domestic tourism is a huge focus for Wonderful Indonesia, as well as welcoming hundreds of thousands more international tourists in 2026 and beyond.
The MaiA platform, and the official Indonesia tourism site, is accessible in multiple languages, including Bahasa Indonesia, English, Dutch, Malay, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Cantonese, German, French, Arabic, and Thai.
Here at The Bali Sun, we wanted to see whether the new MaiA platform compared to our collective knowledge of travel within the province and our personal recommendations for fellow travelers.
We asked MaiA “We’re planning our first vacation to Bali in 2026, we want to see top cultural attractions and avoid the crowds, what do you suggest?”

MaiA responded, “I’d suggest places like the ancient Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave), the beautiful royal temple of Taman Ayun, or even the traditional village of Penglipuran, where you can see authentic Balinese architecture and daily life. Visiting these spots early in the morning or later in the afternoon often helps avoid the peak tourist rush.”
In asking for a suggestion for a place to stay, MaiA pointed us towards top hotels like Bali Dynasty Resort in Kuta and the Prama Sanur Beach Hotel in Sanur as mid-budget, family friendly options
Not bad at all, but it feels that MaiA needs a lot of specific inputs and asks a lot of questions before providing concrete and easily actionable answers.

If we were asked these questions, our gut reaction is to recommend off-path, crowd-free coastal resorts with easy access to top cultural and natural landmarks.
Our first recommendation would be to stay in Lovina in North Bali, to enjoy a crowd-free coastal retreat, with easy access to natural wonders like the waterfalls of Munduk (50-minute driver) and the essential cultural landmarks of the Bedugul Highlands, like Ulun Danu Beratan and Handara Gate, that are only a one-hour scenic drive away. Have a play with the MaiA and let us know what you think!
