Heavy Rains Impact Bali Holidaymakers Across The Island As Cyclones Forecast

Share The Article

Latest weather forecasting from Bali shows that Cyclone Seed 90S has the potential to cause heavy rainfall and strong winds across the island until 8th March.

With more extreme weather warnings in place across Bali and Indonesia more broadly, tourists traveling to the region need to be on high alert.

It is not only flight cancellations that tourists traveling to Bali need to be aware of this week, but the potential for devastating rains, too. Bali will be in the rainy season until late March or early April.

Though this year’s rainy season started more than a month earlier than usual, bringing with it more intensive downpours that have been recorded in recent history, it is hard to rely on typical seasonal patterns to assess when the dry season will begin.

Speaking to reporters, the Head of the Denpasar Region III Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BBMKG), Cahyo Nugroho, said that several areas in Bali must be aware of the potential for extreme weather until 8th March 2026. He explained, “BMKG has identified significant developments in atmospheric dynamics that have the potential to increase rainfall intensity in most areas of Bali.”

Nugroho explained,  “Cyclone Seed 90S, which is currently in the Southern Waters of the Indian Ocean southwest of Banten, shows a pattern of movement eastward towards the Southern Waters of Bali, which has the potential to cause increased rainfall and wind speeds.”

He added,” This condition is also supported by the equatorial Rossby and Kelvin waves, which are predicted to cross the Bali region in the next few days.”

This Cyclone Seed 90S has the potential to impact Denpasar City, the regencies of Badung, Tabanan, Jembrana, Bangli, Gianyar, Karangasem, Klungkung, and Buleleng. For those unfamiliar with the regencies of Bali, these areas are home to all of the island’s major resort areas, including Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran, Uluwatu, Nusa Dua, Sanur, and Ubud.

Nugroho shared “These areas are potentially affected by flooding, flash floods, and landslides, depending on the level of vulnerability of each area.”

Those intending on going out on boat tours, snorkelling and dive trips, surf trips, and making fast boat and ferry crossings must also be aware that forecasts predict wave heights of up to 3.5m in the Bali Strait, Badung Strait, southern Lombok Strait, and the Southern Waters of Bali.

Nugroho concluded, “The public is urged to remain calm but vigilant and to take anticipatory measures to ensure daily activities can proceed safely and smoothly. Continue to monitor the latest information from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).”

Driver on Moped in Rain in Bali

The potential risks of this incoming heavy rain cannot be underestimated. Only last week, dozens of tourists and local community members had to be evacuated from their accommodations and their homes as floodwater rapidly rose.

Hotels and accommodation providers in the worst-affected areas, including Sanur, Kuta, and Legian, have been urged by officials to take a more proactive approach to flood prevention, but with so little time between these huge bouts of rain, both local community members and tourists must be prepared for yet more flooding in the coming days.

Tourists must check in with their accommodation provider and get up to speed with disaster evacuation plans, which range from floods to earthquakes. It is also important for tourists to have a few rainy-day itinerary options available in case outdoor activities are not possible.

Bali Governor Wayan Koster has already called for those on the island to minimise travel by road during the heavy rains, and tourists must also be aware of the risk of road closures and major diversions.
