A 67-year-old man named Tri Muchtar has suffered severe burns from a fire incident that occurred in two cafes located in Canggu, North Kuta, on Sunday (25/4).
The Head of Badung Public Relation Police Officer, Iptu Ketut Gede Oka Bawa confirmed that the incident not only caused injury to a person but also destroyed two buildings. “It also burned down two cafes, Beach Bums Cafe and Canggu Beach Bar that are located on Jalan Batu Bolong Canggu, North Kuta.” Iptu Bawa said.
The incident occurred when Muchtar, who has been working for a gas station known as Bali Petro Jaya Bright Gas, was called by the staff to refuel the 50 kg gas can at Beach Bums Cafe on Sunday morning.
Once Muchtar finished his work, one of the cafe staff named I Luh Kartika (27) realized that the regulator on the gas can wasn’t properly covered, so she asked him if it was safe or not. Muchtar claimed that it was properly installed and safe.
Shortly after, Kartika noticed that the gas can began sizzling, after which it suddenly blew up burning the entire kitchen. The fire rapidly spread to Canggu Beach Bar located next to Beach Bums Cafe.
“Muchtar was almost killed that day, around 30 percent of his body was suffered severe burns from the incident, so he was rushed to Abdi Medical Clinic Canggu but then he was referred to Sanglah Hospital to receive medical attention.” Iptu Bawa concluded.
The fire was finally put out by firefighters in four large fire trucks. According to the police investigation, the incident was caused by a leak on the gas can’s regulator.
