Did you know there is a savannah in Bali? In Karangasem Regency, tourists will find the Savannah Tianyar, a scrubby grassland that spans toward Mount Agung. The area is widely known by locals and domestic tourists, and a few more adventurous international content creators, but now the site is increasing in interest as the views offer an African-like Savannah backdrop and stunning sunset views.
At first glimpse, the Savannah Tianyar is an expansive grazing area, sparsely vegetated and arid. The area is not a formal tourist attraction, and tourists are advised to drive exceptionally carefully along the gravel paths and be wary of the rocky cliffs of the eroded landscape.

Savannah Tianyar really is an untapped gem in Bali, and there are hopes that it will stay that way. There are no tourist facilities, not even a public bathroom. There are no stalls selling cold drinks or souvenirs and no formal car park either. Advice from recent visitors reads, “If you go there, bring your own chairs and table to fill with food and drinks that you also bring yourself. Be careful if there are cows”.

Local reporters recently visited the Savannah Tianyar to see if the area was up to the expectation portrayed on social media and perhaps visited on a bad day. The low mist shrouded the savannah, and they could not get a clear view of the mountain. They described how the grassland was covered in cow dung, and the area was super quiet. On a clear day, the views of Mount Agung are second to none, and the sunrises and sunsets from the Savannah Tianyar are some of the clearest and most colorful in all of Bali.

On a clear day, the Savannah Tianyar is a stunning landscape that is not found elsewhere in Bali. The sprawling savannah grassland can transport you to the plains of Africa, albeit without the risk of the big five interrupting your sundowners. The area has long been popular with outdoor adventure communities in Bali and across Indonesia. Though there is no formal camping site and no facilities, there are dozens of online vlogs of nature lovers camping at the Savannah Tianyar. It’s a popular spot for the motorcycle community, who take long day and multi-day trips around Bali’s rural landscapes.

Perhaps the appeal of Savannah Tianyar is that it is reasonably remote. Sitting on the northeastern coast of Bali, the grassland is 28km away from Amed Beach. Karangasem Regency, like Buleleng Regency, receives comparatively far fewer visitors than Badung Regency, where Canggu, Legian, Seminyak, and Kuta can be found.
Karangasem Regency has so much to offer as a tourist destination and offers visitors a chance to experience a taste of Bali away from resorts. Culturally rich and geographically diverse, there is more to Karangasem for tourists than the sunrise viewpoint of Mount Batur.
As areas like Badung continue to receive huge influxes of tourists, interest is growing in Bali for different experiences. In 2023 industry leaders anticipate the trend for adventure tourism continuing, and Karanagsaem Regency offers plenty of opportunities to explore.
In Amed, a 50-minute drive from Savannah Tianyar, visitors are graced with incredible views of Mount Agung and the village’s famous black sand beach. From a cultural perspective, Karangasem Regency is brimming with sites of spiritual importance to the island. Lempuyang Temple, now reopened after its’s five-day closure for Galungan Festival, is one of Bali’s most famous religious landmarks and is a must-visit during any trip to Karangasem Regency.
As tourists continue to demand something new and different from their travel experiences, and as demand for adventure travel continues to increase, areas like Savannah Tianyar offer a wealth of opportunity.
It could be making the transition from a hidden gem to a full-blown tourist attraction in the coming months and years if village tourism and community-based tourism initiatives continue to develop lesser-visited areas in Bali.

Finally another untouched part of Bali that can be soon ravaged in the name of tourism development. Should invite the usual tourism officials to make plans for theme parks, lounges and resorts. Just turn the dang area into a concrete Disneyland godda##it! 🤣
