Bali’s magical Fireflies Garden has won a major conservation and eco-tourism prize.
The locally owned and operated attraction has won praise for its commitment to preserving local ecology and providing a high-quality experience for visitors.

Located in Taro Village, just outside of Ubud, the Fireflies Garden, also known as the Firefly Conservation House, is one of the most successful locally operated eco-tourism initiatives in the area. The site was founded by local residents I Wayan Gede Ardika and I Komang Petak.
Wayan Wardika, who is the manager of the attraction today, attended the awards ceremony on behalf of the team.
The Fireflies Garden was recognised as one of the region’s leading eco-tourism initiatives as part of the 80th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia celebrations held over the weekend.
Speaking to reporters following the award ceremony at the Gianyar Cultural Center, Wardika explained that the Firefly Conservation House is an independent initiative built to preserve fireflies as bio-indicators of environmental health.
Fireflies are highly sensitive insects, and the presence of pollution seriously affects their chances of survival. This means that if fireflies are present in an environment, the overall ecosystem is in pretty good health.
The Fireflies Garden is not only a tourist attraction but a conservation hub. There is a mini laboratory in the middle of the firefly habitat to research the life cycle, breeding, and behaviour of fireflies. There are hopes that by working with local farmers, the firefly flight radius will increase to as far as 2 kilometers.
According to Wardika, achieving this will require 27 hectares of land. “The target is two kilometers with 35 farmers on 27 hectares of land. Currently, there are only four farmers with a radius of less than 1 hectare. The struggle is still long.”
Wardika explained, “This conservation house also educates the wider community about the existence of fireflies and their importance in nature, raises public awareness of the dangers of excessive chemical use in agricultural areas, and involves the government in researching fireflies more deeply.”
Speaking to reporters last year about the longstanding vision for the Fireflies Garden, co-founder Wayan Gede Ardika shared, “This firefly conservation destination started with an organic garden.”
“We use natural fertilizers and pesticides, and the soil and water are good. I didn’t expect it to actually bring in fireflies. Finally, there were lots of fireflies; we built a conservation in the rice field area.”

The shift to organic gardening has brought about benefits not only to the ecology of Taro Village but to the community, too. The development of eco-tourism has created alternative income streams and more organic produce to go around.
There is a range of magical tour experiences to explore at the Fireflies Garden. The most popular is the Firefly Tour Package, priced at only IDR 100,000 per person.

This evening session offers guests the chance to enjoy the wonders of the fireflies immersed in nature while enjoying a locally grown tea or coffee, and special fried cassava snacks.
The Romantic Dinner Package is a gorgeous way to spend an evening with a loved one.
Priced at IDR 500,000 per couple, guests are treated to a lovingly decorated, secluded table that offers views of the fireflies, an à la carte dining menu, and a tour of the Fireflies Garden.

The Firefly Conservation House was just one of many environmental winners awarded at the ceremony. Best innovation was also awarded to Komang Wiratama Putra from Banjar Anggarkasih in Medahan Village, for the Raja Prani Farmers Group innovation project, which is developing new streamlined methods for high-value shallot crops in the community.
The Marine and Fisheries award was given to Ketut Adi Putra from Pering Village, who devised a Jukung Sky Boat for fishermen in Medan Berkarang.
