Have you ever heard of Bedugul? You may not know this region of Bali by name, but you’ve almost certainly seen photos of it.

Home to iconic cultural landmarks like the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple and Handara Gate, Bali’s Bedugul in the Central Highlands is becoming increasingly popular with tourists.

If you’re looking for an off-path destination in Bali in 2026, let Bedugul be the destination that moves off the travel vision board and into the camera roll.

Offering crisp, cool mountain air, a slower pace of rural life, stunning cultural landmarks, and welcoming locally owned accommodations, Bedugul can charm the socks off even the most hardhearted of globetrotters.

The highlight of any trip to Bedugul is surely a visit to Ulun Danu Beratan Temple. This picture postcard temple is not only one of the most famous landmarks in Bali, but in all of Indonesia.

The temple looks as if it is floating atop Lake Beratan, and with the Tabanan hills providing the perfect lush green backdrop, the reality really does live up to expectation.

Over the last month, Ulun Danu Beratan Temple has welcomed an increase in the number of visitors. Public Relations Officer for Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, Made Sukarata, spoke with reporters about how the festive season is going at the attraction.

Sukarata shared, “For domestic tourists, from December 1 to 19, the average number of visits was around 400 to 500 people per day.” Adding “However, from December 20 to 27, the number jumped to around 1,500 to 1,800 people per day.”

He confirmed that the number of international tourists visiting the temple and the lakeside is reaching 700 people per day, with the influx of visits expected to continue through to 3rd January.

For tourists visiting Ulun Danu Bertan Temple between now and 4th January 2026, there is a series of exciting cultural events taking place as part of the Gong Kebyar Cultural Festival that the team is hosting.

The festival, included in the entry ticket price for tourists, features performances of the fiery Kecak dance, the mythical Barong dance, and other Balinese cultural dances accompanied by a live gamelan, the traditional Balinese orchestra.

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple can be explored in just over an hour, though longer if you book a guided tour to delve deeper into the temple’s and the Bedugul area’s history.

The beauty of Bedugul as a destination is that the highlights can be enjoyed during a whistlestop day trip from resorts in the central south of Bali, like Canggu, or the community is really a destination in its own right that is worthy of a 3-night stay at least. Why not take the time to slow down and move on mountain time while you have the chance?

Must-visit attractions in Beudgul include The Blooms Garden, the Bali Botanical Garden, and Handara Gate. For families visiting Bedugul, there is one very special day out to be enjoyed. Bali Farm House is a fun-filled day in the outdoors for all ages. There is so much to do at the farm and so many memories to be made.

From pony rides to picnics with the donkeys through to seasonal strawberry picking and farm-to-table dining at The Barn, a day out at Bali Farm House offers something a little different to the beachside resorts of the south.

Bedugul is also home to one of Bali’s newest man-made tourist attractions, the Turyapada Tower. The telecommunications tower now doubles as a 115m high viewing platform and tourist attraction.

Visitors are spoilt with unrivalled views of the central highlands, and on a clear day, it is possible to see Bali’s highest peaks in the distance and enjoy stunning views of the rolling Tabanan Hills to the south and the jungles of Buleleng to the North and Northwest.
