As October steps into full swing, new travel data has been released about the number of tourists visiting Bali in the last month.
Every month, the Bali Central Statistics Agency for Indonesia reveals a new data set with a month’s delay. The Agency has just released the August figures, which make for very interesting reading.
The number of tourists arriving directly into Bali Province in August 2024 was notably higher than the same period in 2023 but was down 1.44% in July 2024.
This incremental decline in arrivals from July to August is to be expected as the peak of the high season falls in late June to mid-July. The total number of foreigners arriving in Bali in August 2024 was 616,641.
Further analysis of data from the Bali Central Statistics Agency shows that the average length of stay in Bali is also on the rise.
The average length of stays by foreign holidaymakers and domestic tourists visiting Bali has risen to 2.86 days, which is higher than the year before.
While the average length of stay of just under three days may initially seem quite low, this is the average stay of over 600,000 people.
Many visitors to Bali are long weekend trippers, visiting from neighboring islands like Java and neighboring countries like Malaysia and Singapore.
Australian tourists remained the most frequent international arrivals into Bali in August 2024, with 142,000 Aussies hopping over for a dose of winter sunshine. In surprising reading, the biggest increase in the number of visitors to Bali was from Italy, increasing by 175% from the month prior.
The Acting Head of the Bali Central Statistics Agency, Kadek Agus Wirawan, told Bali that the jump from July to August in the number of Italian tourists was stark, rising from 9,763 to 26,934.
However, Italy still didn’t crack the top ten most frequent arrivals to Bali in August, with the top ten remaining much the same; Australia, India, China, the UK, the US, Singapore, South Korea, France, Malaysia, and Germany in that order.
What is clear is that Bali remains the most frequent first and often only stop for international travelers in Indonesia.
Wirawan explained to reporters, “When viewed based on the percentage of visits coming to Indonesia, 45.7% of foreign tourists entering Indonesia entered through Bali between January and August.”
This has reflected well for hotels across the province, which saw occupancy rise, and tourists are increasingly seeking luxurious stays.
Wirawan shared, “The highest occupancy rate for star hotels was at 5-star hotels, which was 76%, while the lowest occupancy was for 2-star hotels which were only 58%”.
The most popular destinations for Indonesian tourists heading abroad were also disclosed this week. Malaysia came in first place, followed by Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, China, Cambodia, Australia, Japan, and South Korea.
As both domestic and international tourists become more mobile, tourism leaders in Bali are encouraging holidaymakers to head a little off the beaten path, especially in Bali.
Wonderful Indonesia, the national tourism board, has this week shared a list of Bali’s best crowd-free destinations, and the Minister of Tourism, Sandiaga Uno, has just launched his new 3B Tour Package, which sees connectivity between East Java, West Bali, and North Bali made even easier for tourists seeking wild landscapes, cultural wonders and ease of travel.
The Ministry of Tourism is set to launch a new Digital Tourism Information Centre next week that will serve as a central hub of information for tourists looking to plan visits to Bali and beyond.
The platform, which will be known as TIC Digital Nusantara, is set to bring together essential travel information that will help tourists feel more confident exploring destinations like Bali.
As shared in a press statement, Dwi Marhen Yono, Director of Tourism Marketing of the Archipelago of the Ministry of Tourism, explained, “With TIC Digital Nusantara, traveling will be easier and more fun. Tourists can get complete and safe information.”

So Austrian tourists from Australia are the number one visitors to Bali. And the minister for tourism Santiago Dontknow is launching new travel packages to East Java and Bangyuwani? If you think rubbish and plastic pollution is atrocious in Bali East Java is on another level. And traffic over there is insane. The ministers might want to raise this issue and convey what initiatives are in place to do something about this to foster cleaner more accessible tourist destinations instead of parroting the usual delusional exaggerative crap they and the Bali Sun come up with.
