Bali Inspects Gas Stations To Reduce Scams On Tourists

Ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holidays in Indonesia,  tourism leaders nationwide are conducting spot checks and assessments to ensure the whole festival runs smoothly.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and is the time of year when millions of Indonesian families take their annual vacations. 

Thousands of Indonesian families from around the country will travel to Bali for the Eid al-Fitri and Lebaran holidays.

The national holiday of Hari Raya Idul Fitri, also known as Lebaran, will run from Tuesday, April 9th, until Monday, April 15th.

With thousands of families traveling by road from Java to Bali and back again, officials have conducted spot checks at gas stations to ensure everything is operating above board.

These spot checks happen on a regular basis and help ensure that local people, international tourists, and domestic visitors are getting the amount of fuel that they pay for.

In the past, inspectors have found that some gas stations have been using faulty or intentionally tampered with fuel pumps to give less fuel to customers than they see on the screen. 

The Special Criminal Investigation Directorate of the Bali Police carried out unannounced inspections at a number of fuel-filling stations in the Denpasar City area.

In a report published immediately after the inspections, AKBP Sangaji said, “From the results of the inspection, we did not find any fraud or anything that could harm consumers or the public. On average, fuel casting machines function well and normally.”

He also confirmed that from the results of coordination with Pertamina gas stations and Pertamina depots, it was confirmed that fuel stocks in the Bali area were safe to support community activities during the Eid 2024 period.

There will be no fuel shortages, as has also been the case in parts of Indonesia during this festive time of year.

AKBP Sangajii concluded, “We also appeal to gas stations in the jurisdiction of Bali not to let anyone cheat and harm the community.”

When filling up cars or motorcycles at proper gas stations (as opposed to the small filling stations in villages) tourists must always double check that the attendant has reset the gas metre to zero.

There have been dozens of reports over the years that tourists have been overcharged for their gas as attendants have failed to reset the system before fueling up the new customer. 

While the Hari Raya Idul Fitri holidays run from Tuesday 9th until Monday 15th of April, the peak flow of traffic in and out of Bali is predicted for the weekends of the 6th-7th of April and the 13th-14th of April.

Tourists traveling around Bali’s most popular resort areas, to and from the airport, and across the island to visit the top landmarks must allow for extra time as there will be thousands more vehicles on the roads. 

Tourists have also been advised to make hotel bookings for this hotel period as early as possible. With hotel booking reaching over 80% occupancy in Bali’s most popular resort areas, tourists run the risk of missing out on their chosen hotel if they don’t secure rooms soon. 

However, tourists planning trips to Bali during the Eid al-Fitr festival should also have a search online for great value package deals.

With demand for hotel rooms and travel experiences soaring, all tourism businesses want to be part of the action and create incredible promotions to get tourists through the door.

Although Bali is a majority Balinese Hindu island, Indonesia has the largest majority Muslim nation in the world.

Hari Raya Idul Fitri is a national public holiday, so some businesses in Bali will be operating at limited hours during this time.
