Bali Implements New Safety Strategy On Roads To Help Protect Tourists

Bali has confirmed that it will be investing in new measures to help make the island’s roads safer.

The update comes after a series of fatal collisions have been recorded in the province over the last month, and as reports suggest that collision rates are increasing even in Bali’s most popular tourism hotspots.

The Communication, Informatics, Cryptography, and Statistics Service of Buleleng Regency has confirmed plans to install CCTV cameras at a series of ancient prone spots in the area. The new cameras will monitor sections of the road in case a collision occurs.

The Head of the Communication, Informatics, Cryptography, and Statistics Service of Buleleng, Ketut Suwarmawan, told reporters that the preparations are underway and that new CCTV cameras will be installed along the Singaraja-Denpasar Highway soon.

He explained,  “It is possible to install CCTV on accident-prone routes such as in Banjar Dinas Lumbanan, as long as it meets supporting requirements such as internet, electricity, and pole infrastructure.”

In the Buleneg Regency area, six areas of ancient prone roads are currently covered by CCTV, and more will be added. According to Suwarmawan, the installation of each camera costs IDR 30-60 million.

He added, “Maybe in the next budget year we will propose the addition of CCTV so that it can be installed in potential areas, especially on accident-prone routes.”

The commitment to making Bali’s roads safer, especially those in Buleleng Regency, comes after the tragic death of two young siblings who were involved in a collision on the Singaraja-Denpasar Highway on Saturday, 26th April 2025. Gede Krisna Ari Putra, aged 20, and his younger sister, Komang Karna Angga Wijaya, aged 8, both died after their motorcycle collided with an oncoming tourist bus; an incident that shocked communities across Bali.

While in the north of Bali, in Buleleng Regency, leaders are implementing new security measures to help improve road safety, in the south of the island, Bali Police are also cracking down on road users who are posing a threat to safety and breaking the law.

From the 1st to the 3rd of May 2025, Bali Police conducted three-day operations to identify road users driving illegally modified vehicles, driving without the correct paperwork, and breaking Indonesian traffic laws. The operation was carried out in Badung Regency, which is the area of Bali home to the biggest and most popular tourism resorts, including Canggu, Uluwatu, Kuta, and Seminyak.

Over the course of the three days police confirmed to reporters that they recited 81 traffic violations were recorded and 56 vehicles seized as part of the mission.

In a media statement Badung Police Chief AKBP M. Arif Batubara explained that the operation focused in key areas Simpang Tiying Tutul in Pererenan Village and Jalan Raya Anggungan, Anggungan Village; both of which are in the Canggu area.

The operation found violations across the board, with police pulling over both local drivers and foreigners. AKBP Batubara revealed that the 30 foreigners who were caught were not carrying complete vehicle documents and that most of them used motorcycles with non-standard exhaust modifications.

He explained “Most of the foreigners who are [pulled over] do not wear helmets, do not have a driver’s license, and carry motorcycles with the noise of the brong exhaust. They disturb the comfort and order of traffic, so we immediately take action.”

The operation is a timely reminder for tourists in Bali right now, and those planning to visit the island in the future, to have a full international driving license and travel insurance.

Tourists must obey Indonesian traffic laws, which stipulate that helmets are mandatory. While many people on the island choose to drive without helmets, tourists should be aware that it is an offense to do so.

Tourists renting motorcycles on the island must be diligent and check the condition of their vehicle before driving off. They must also check that their provider can issue them with all the correct paperwork for the motorcycle, including insurance, licensing, and roadworthiness papers.
