A group of fishermen in Serangan created tourist boats and canoes from plastic bottles. One of the fishermen named Wayan Patut (aged 51) confirmed that most plastic bottles he used to build the boats were from scavengers around Serangan.

He explained that this project was initiated to spread awareness about the importance of a clean environment.

“We created the boats which will help us gather more plastic waste in the lagoon areas,” Patut said on Monday (4/4).

Patut and his partners created a traditional Balinese boat of 5 meters and another boat of 9 meters in length in front of Kura Kura Bali Turtle Island in Serangan. The project that was started in 2021 required over 1,400 plastic bottles that they bought from scavengers and collected themselves from the sea.

After finishing the first boat, Patut and his three partners created a bigger boat that required over 4,800 plastic bottles. This took over 4 months of work.

“This project was also initiated as an alternative solution to our waste problem. We recycle and spread awareness through the 4E (Ecology, Education, Estetics and Economy) to create a healthier environment,” Patut concluded.

Love to see one of their boats. Bali needs a proper system for all waste, has needed for many years.

Wouldn’t it be cleaner and safer to just make up-country villagers stop throwing all their trash into the rivers to wash down when it rains? What about a garbage collection scheme?

Photo of these bottle-boats? Something like this one:

There should be enough bottles on the beaches to build a few bottle-ferries as well... that will enlighten the tourists looking for Nusa Penida transport ;)
