The National Electricity Corporation (PLN) will completely shut down the electricity in Nusa Penida in observance of the Day of Silence (Nyepi) on March 3.
The Public Relations Manager of PLN for Bali, I Made Arya, confirmed that there would be a blackout in Nusa Penida during the Day of Silence, as was requested by the local authorities.
“This implementation is in fulfillment of the request of local officials, as the noise from the generators can disturb the silence during the celebration,” Arya said on Friday (25/2).
Arya explained that the implementation would last 24 hours, starting from the morning of March 3.
“The blackout will start from 6:00 am on March 3 to 6:00 am the next day. The residents will have access to electricity once the celebration ends,” Arya added. This policy will only be implemented in Nusa Penida.
“Unless a problem arises during the celebration, Mainland Bali won’t be affected by the blackout as it will only be implemented in Nusa Penida. In any case, our staff is ready to respond if mainland residents will have issues with their electricity,” Arya concluded.
However, PLN staff will only be deployed for emergencies.

@Ben, there are other meats to eat other than pork. Fresh sea food in Jimbaran. You have to think out of the box on that quiet day.

@Wayan Bo, things like meat you'll have to eat really quickly without refrigeration. Even if freshly slaughtered, pork would probably unsafe to eat within a day at 30 degrees.
This is fine if you can eat the whole hog on the same day, but the logistics of that would be difficult.

@Jens R., anything that requires being refrigerated. I probably would not eat at a restaurant on the island for at least a week after the blackout: If restaurants keep their meat in the fridge, and that shuts off for 24 hours, i reckon it'll result in food poisoning.
I don't really get the "noise from the generators" argument: Doesn't Penida normally get power from Bali, so there is no noise, but shutting the power down will result in people running their own diesel generators, resulting in more noise?
