The Nusa Dua is one of Bali’s most popular vacation resorts. Known for its luxury hotels and pristine shorelines, The Nusa Dua is one of the most established and highly regarded resorts in all of Southeast Asia.
Ever working to push the boundaries of what is possible, the Nusa Dua has confirmed that they have once again improved their offering to tourists and to the island’s heritage.

Speaking to reporters this week, the InJourney Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) team has confirmed that it is strengthening the implementation of sustainability principles in the Nusa Dua area through the development of Green Open Space (RTH program).
At present, the green open space in The Nusa Dua area covers approximately 97 hectares, or 27% of the total area of 359.7 hectares.
In total, 43 hectares have been planted with more than 5,700 trees from 138 vegetation species, including 32 local and endemic species to Bali and Indonesia. This step is part of the company’s ‘Protecting Nature’ approach within its sustainability framework.
Speaking to the media, ITDC’s Commercial and Marketing Director, Febrina Mediana, explained that green open spaces play a pivotal role in improving the quality of the resort for tourists, local communities, and the environment. She emphasized that green open spaces are not merely landscape elements but also part of the essential ecological infrastructure that helps improve air quality, regulate regional temperatures, and strengthen resilience to climate change.
She shared, “Green open space plays a strategic role in improving the quality of tourism destinations while strengthening the competitiveness of tourism areas. Green open space is not merely a landscape element, but part of the ecological infrastructure that significantly contributes to improving air quality, controlling regional temperatures, and strengthening resilience to climate change.”
Mediana confirmed that The Nusa Dua are seeking to build upon their successes and develop more nature-based and sustainable tourism offerings in the area. She shared, “The strengthening of green open space in The Nusa Dua is aimed at creating a healthy, comfortable, and sustainable destination ecosystem, not just one that is visually appealing.”
Although best known as a luxury resort area, The Nusa Dua has quietly been pioneering sustainable tourism in Bali since it was first established. Since 1979, the area has implemented a lagoon system capable of treating approximately 10,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day for reuse in green area irrigation.
This system supports efficient water use and the implementation of the circular water system.

Mediana explained, “Through the integration of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles, ITDC positions green open spaces as strategic green infrastructure that not only strengthens destination competitiveness but also maintains ecosystem balance, increases resilience to climate change, and supports the development of sustainable, resilient, and low-carbon Indonesian tourism.”
The Nusa Dua has also made notable efforts to control its carbon emissions. A recent study of the resort area showed that the total carbon absorption in The Nusa Dua resort area reached 16,279.57 tons.

The area also has an average biomass of around 102.6 tons per hectare, with a carbon content of around 48.2 tons of carbon dioxide per hectare, equivalent to approximately 176.8 tons of CO2e per hectare.
These figures demonstrate the area’s vegetation’s ability to significantly absorb and store carbon, while maintaining ecosystem balance amidst high tourism activity.

All these figures may seem a little dull and unimportant to tourists planning a vacation, but knowing that The Nusa Dua and the hotels within the resort are working around the clock to ensure that their businesses are as responsible to the environment as possible can give tourists and holidaymakers peace of mind that they are making a sustainable choice in their travel plans.
The Nusa Dua’s most sustainable and eco-friendly hotels include Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort and The Laguna, A Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, both of which are top picks for Bali vacations in 2026 and beyond!
