The global wellness and beauty tourism market is officially worth a whopping USD 5.6 trillion. An almost incomprehensibly large amount of money, and Bali wants its fair share of the action.
For tourists wishing to rest, rejuvenate, and relax on the Island of the Gods, the services and experiences on offer are about to become bigger and better than ever.
The Co-Founder and Director of the Bali Wellness and Beauty Expo, Dr Diah Permana Tirtawati, just hosted a talk show in Sanur and spoke to the gathered audience of industry leaders about the impact the global wellness and beauty tourism market can have on Bali.
The potential benefits, as explained by Dr Tirtawati, extend far beyond the industry’s revenue and can bring a host of genuine benefits for tourists.
Dr. Tirtawati cited figures from the Global Wellness Institute that pitched Indonesia’s wellness business turnover at USD 14 billion, within the trillions amassed by the industry globally.
He wants to see the traditional Balinese practices and principles of Bali Maha Usadhi integrated into the wellness tourism sector so that these traditional holistic healing modalities can help promote health and prevent disease.
Dr Tirtawati told the audience, “Bali Maha Usadhi is originally owned by the Balinese people, the way Balinese people have passed down from generation to generation to make themselves healthy towards the goal of eternal happiness.”
He called on the government to issue more support to practitioners of all wellness practices connected to Bali Maha Usadhi to help develop an integrated and holistic medical, health, and wellness tourism industry.
He noted, “Bali is the only [place] that has a hospital that is able to marry conventional and traditional health efforts like at Bali Mandara Hospital.”
Integrative medical and holistic health care will be available to patients at the Bali International Hospital when the facility formally opens in April 2025.
The Bali International Hospital will offer world-class medical care and specialize in oncology, cardiology, gastrology, and more. The hospital is also expected to offer supportive holistic care derived from Bali’s own wisdom tradition. The Sanur Special Economic Zone is set to feature a sizeable ethnobotanical garden, home to Bali’s most powerful and adaptable plant medicines.
As 2025 progresses, there will be more and more news coming from the wellness tourism sector that will surely manifest into new promotions, experiences, and offerings for international tourists. The Bali Wellness and Beauty Expo will be held in Sanur from 27th to 29th June 2025.
Dr Tirtawati explained, “This expo is a promotional platform for Bali, specifically in the wellness and beauty sector. We deliberately look at for markets that are being promoted by the government. Bali is a holistic destination. Everything is already in Bali, it just needs to be introduced to the world and packaged well so that it is accepted by the international community.”
Bali’s health and wellness offerings are a major draw for tourists, whether it be world-class spas, incredible yoga schools, retreats hosted by global experts, or Bali’s own indigenous health practices, there is a tonic for every aliment of the body, mind or soul known to man in Bali.
In October 2024 leaders from Badung Regency, Bali’s most popular tourism region, came together to confirm that they will be developing a new tourism model called NEWA, which focuses on Nature, Eco-Tourism, Wellness Tourism, and Adventure.
In this move, leaders were keen to promote the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which is the notion of harmony between people, the gods, and the land. If coupled with greater promotion of Bali Maha Usadhi, there is an opportunity for government and industry leaders in Bali to establish culturally respectful and sustainable tourism as a standard, as has been a priority since the end of the pandemic.
