New Bali-Darwin Flight Route Boosts Travel Options For Australian Tourists

Low-cost airline AirAsia has just confirmed that it will be launching a new Australia-Bali flight service in March 2025.

AirAsia is one of the most affordable and, therefore, popular airlines for Australian and Indonesian tourists traveling between the two nations.

The new route will operate between Darwin and Denpasar and launch on 22nd March 2025. In a written statement published on the AirAsia website, the CEO of Indonesia AirAsia, Veranita Josephine explained that the airline wants to bring more value and improved choices for travelers in the territory.

Josephine wrote, “Bali is now our largest hub in terms of flight capacity, driven by strong demand. These direct flights will cater to the enduring popularity of Bali as a destination for Australians and offer great low-fare connections to over 130 destinations across the AirAsia Group network.”

She added, “Passengers from Darwin can enjoy seamless connections via Bali to destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Hong Kong, and Komodo Island starting from as low as under AUD300. At the same time, millions of guests from across Asia will be welcomed to the Northern Territory.”

“They will discover the extraordinary culture, wildlife, and natural beauty of Kakadu National Park, Arnhem Land, and other iconic locations where the tropics meet the outback.”

She said, “We thank Airport Development Group and the Northern Territory Government for their support in making these services a reality.”

The new service will offer over 1,000 seats to passengers traveling between Darwin and Bali, and tickets will start at just AUD 189.

Sandra de Kock, the Airport Development Group Executive General Manager, also contributed to the statement, noting that there is a strong demand for Bali travel in Darwin. She shared, “Territorians have been calling for more options to fly to Bali, and we’re excited to deliver with the return of AirAsia,”

Adding, “Bali has long been the number one holiday destination for Darwin residents, and these flights will undoubtedly see a surge of travelers embarking on their Indonesian adventures.”

The flight service will operate every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with the first flight departing Denpasar on Saturday 22nd March. The outbound Denpasar – Darwin service will be operated on flight number QZ 540 and depart at 11.40am, touching down in Darwin at 3.55pm.

The inbound service will operate on flight number QZ 541, departing at 4.35 pm and arriving in Bali at 5.55 pm.

There is high hope that this AirAsia Darwin-Bali service will prove to be viable for the airline in the long term. In October 2024, BatikAir had to cancel its Canberra-Bali flight service just months after it was launched.

In a statement the airline explained “The suspension was deemed necessary to ensure that Batik Air can continue to operate efficiently across its entire route network. It reflects a commitment to ensuring the reliability and quality of service that passengers expect.”

The airline explained, “Batik Air recognizes the impact this suspension will have on its passengers and is actively reassessing the Denpasar-Canberra route.”

In 2025, Australian tourists are expected to remain the most frequent international arrivals to the province. Data from Bali Airport shows that the airport serves, on average, 40 flights to and from Australia every day.

The airport currently serves flight routes between nine major Australian cities, and of the over 7.9 million international passengers served by Bali Airport on both arrival and departure flights between January and July 2024, 58% of them were traveling between Australia and Bali.

This week, Bali Airport formally closed its Christmas and New Year support post at Bali Airport; this occasion typically marks the start of the low season in Bali. The next peak in tourist visits is anticipated around the Eid al-Fitr festival on 30th and 31st March.

Batik Air? I trust they have addressed the issue with both pilots taking a nap on he job:

LINK "Indonesia is investigating local carrier Batik Air after both pilots were found to have fallen asleep for 28 minutes mid-flight.

The Airbus A320 briefly veered off course but landed safely, with all 153 passengers and crew members unharmed."

In the past some Idonesian pilots used to address the above issue by using meth (Lion air: parent to Batik Air, Garuda, Citilink all involved):

"A wave of pilots caught with meth in Indonesia has brought the government's drug czar to a terrifying conclusion: drugs have become part of Indonesian pilots' "lifestyle."

The most recent of several incidents involved a pilot with domestic carrier Lion Air discovered high on methamphetamine just three hours before a 6:15 a.m. flight, the Jakarta Post reports."
