Tourism businesses in Bali have been given a firm warning from the Bali Provincial Tourism Office to improve standards of cleanliness, health, safety, and environmental sustainability this holiday season.
As over one million international arrivals are expected to travel to Bali this month, in addition to hundreds of thousands of domestic tourists, Bali is Indonesia’s crown jewel in terms of tourism, and leaders want to see it shine.
Cleanliness, health, safety and environmental sustainability in businesses in Indonesia is a set of criteria that must be be adhered to, often referred to just as the CHSE scheme, the protocols ensure that business, especially those in the tourism sector are adhering to a national standard.
The Head of the Bali Province Tourism Office, Tjokorda Bagus Pemayun, told reporters, “We have written to tourism stakeholders to ensure that facilities and infrastructure are safe, clean, maintain trash and [prioritize] comfort.”
He references that while businesses are expected to keep their side of the quality tourism agreement, tourists, too, have a role to play in respecting and behaving appropriately while on the island.
Pemayun referenced the do’s and don’ts of Bali travel, a provincial set of guidelines that help tourists not only make the most of their time in the region but also support culture, the land, and the Balinese community.
Do’s include guidance that explains, “Tourists must behave politely and respectfully in sacred places, tourist attractions, restaurants, on the roads, and in all public places.”
Guidelines in the don’ts section advise tourists to “only stay in an accommodation business place that has a permit in accordance with the provisions of the laws and regulations of Bali and Indonesia.”
Pemayun also confirmed that he and his teams are working to ensure that tourists can easily move from A to B this festive season.
With so many more tourists on the island and so many more vehicles traveling along the already congested streets, traffic jams have been some of the biggest issues faced by tourism leaders in Bali during the Christmas and New Year holidays of years gone by.
Pemayun told reporters, “We coordinate with the Transportation Agency because they have made several options to reduce congestion. We do not want a repeat of the severe traffic jam on December 29 last year.”
He is, of course, referred to as one of the wildest traffic jams that Bali has ever seen, with leaders vastly underestimating the number of vehicles that would be using the Mandara Toll Road alone, which leads to gridlock and tourists having no option other than to abandon their vehicles and run the remainder of the journey to the airport.
Accommodation providers have also been called to ensure the safety and comfort of all guests at all times, but especially during the high season.
The Deputy Chairman of the Bali Restaurant and Hotels Association (PHRI), I Gusti Agung Ngurah Rai Suryawijaya, told reporters, “We ensure the cleanliness of hotels; only the cleanliness in public areas should be a concern.”
The PHRI has over 400 partner hotels in Bali, which accumulate to offer over 160,000 rooms across the province.
Members must adhere to a strict set of safety, cleanliness, and hospitality criteria in order to offer a high-quality stay to guests and to maintain their membership.
Tourists are encouraged, however, to maintain a level of personal awareness and a focus on personal safety throughout their time in Bali, especially when attractions and resorts are more crowded and especially as the rainy season continues to pose the threat of natural disasters.
Tourists are reminded not only to take out a fully comprehensive travel and health insurance policy but also to check the policy wording and all policy documents before traveling to the island.
Policies should provide coverage in the incident of a medical emergency, accidental coverage, cover in the incident of a natural disaster impacting health, safety, or travel plans, and more.
