Two of Bali’s top tourist attractions are about to become more accessible for visitors. Penglipuran Village is making intensive efforts to improve disability access to the ancient village.
Over in Kintamani, a new boardwalk will be constructed to make it safer and easier for tourists to visit the famous Segara Ulun Danu Temple.
Penglipuran Village in Bangli Regency is not only one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bali but has been named one of the best tourist villages in the world.
The village has been named by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation as one of 54 winners at the Best Tourism Village Awards in 2023.
The village has been intensively investing and strategizing ways to ensure that its tourism offering remains at a world-class standard.
In the coming months, leaders at Penglipuran Village will focus their efforts on making the attraction more inclusive and improving access for tourists with disabilities.
Wayan Sumiarsa, who is the Head of the Penglipuran Village Management Team, has told reporters that although much progress has been made, there is still a way to go.
He shared, “What we need to improve is related to disability access. What we only have now is on the main village road. Many people have also provided input so that on the main village road, there is access for people with disabilities.”
These improvements will be established by Penglipuan Village in partnership with PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) and the Bangli Level II Regional Government.
Sumiarsa added, “If they come here to help, if it is in accordance with our concept, namely sustainable tourism. We are open to cooperation as long as they have to follow the rules here.”
Some of the first improvements to be made include better provision of disabled toilets and parking.
Currently, it is possible for wheelchair users to visit the main pedestrian street in Penglipruan Village, and access part of the walkway through the bamboo forest; both of which make up a huge part of the experience.
Though due to the nature of the old entryways to each of the houses, it is very difficult for wheelchair users to explore the houses and gardens.
Over in Kintamani, officials from the Bangli Regency Government have confirmed that they have been awarded with Special Allocation Funds (DAK) to invest in constructing a wooden walkway to Segara Ulun Danu Temple.
The iconic temple has become a picture postcard landmark of the island and receives tens of thousands of visitors every year.
However, the lakeside walkway to Segara Ulun Danu Temple is an uneven gravel path that is inaccessible or an uncomfortable walk for many tourists.
The Bangli Tourism and Culture Service, I Gede Putu Budiastawa, confirmed that IDR 14 billion in special allocation funding has been awarded for 2024, and IDR 5.4 billion has already been assigned to improving tourist attractions in the area.
Budiastawa told reporters that the boardwalk will provide access to the popular tourist attraction and selfie booths overlooking Segara Ulun Danu Temple.
He explained, “Visitors can take a walk on the edge of the lake. This boardwalk is also a supporting facility for the amphitheater, which will be built in 2023. Hopefully, work on this boardwalk will run smoothly so that work can begin in May 2024.”
Huge investments in improving tourism infrastructure in the increasingly popular destination of Kintamani are well underway. Kintamani, the gateway to Bali’s famous Mount Batur, is becoming more of a destination in its own right.
Projects currently underway in Kintamani include the construction of the hiking center at the Toyobungkah Mount Batur Climbing Tour Guide Association Post as well as the Segara Temple Amphitheater.
The spot will offer tourists an alternative place to Uluwatu Temple for tourists to watch mesmerizing traditional cultural shows like the Kecak dance.
This is in addition to developments at the Mount Batur Geopark Gate to improve tourist access to the iconic sunrise hiking route.

This is all well and good.
However the pressing issue is the mountain of trash now accumulating inside Denpasar due to fire at Suwung landfill.
Local trash collection depots (TPS) are overflowing with 3 meter tall trash mountain at TPS Gunung Agung. Inside all small alleys (Gg.) the trash is piling up and a rotten stench spreading. This is a health disaster in the making.
So forget about "nice to haves" and focus on basic infrastructure now.
