Major Changes For Tourists At Bali’s Most Famous Beach

Major changes are afoot at one of Bali’s most famous beaches.

Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida is one of the most recognizable landscapes in the province, but due to the high volume of visitors, there have been an increasing amount of accidents on the precarious coastal path and shoreline. 

Kelingking Beach shot to international fame thanks to social media. The stunning clifftop vista, pristine white sandy beach, and perfect blue waters have quickly become one of the most in-demand travel experiences in Bali.

Yet, the clifftops, coastal walkway, and beach itself have been the site of dozens of highly traumatic incidents for tourists.

From sprained ankles to broken legs, and in some tragic cases even deaths, leaders are committed to ensuring that the famous landscape is a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

With this in mind, the Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, will be investing a huge amount of regency funds in redeveloping the Kelingking Beach landscape in partnership with local communities.

He wants to implement a ‘one gate one destination’ policy on the island, which means that tourists pay an entry fee per destination they visit, rather than implementing a set tourism tax for those who want to visit Nusa Penida. 

With these entry fees, along with a healthy chunk of the regency budget, leaders will be conducting a huge construction project that will increase public safety at Kelingking Beach.

Regent Suwirta told the media, “By neatly organizing [the island] with an integrated One Gate One Destination levy service concept, it is hoped that it will be able to increase the duration of tourist visits to Nusa Penida.”

He explained that the new development will receive IDR 37 billion of funding from the regency. The funds will be used to construct safe entryways, accessible trials, stages and viewing platforms, gazebos, pergolas for shade, stairways on the steeper sides of the cliffs, as well as a landscaping arrangement of green open spaces by maximizing bougainvillea flowers and other supporting buildings for the destination.

Regent Suwirta shared, “Nusa Penida has a number of superior destinations, each of which will be arranged with careful planning. The aim is to provide added value for comfort, tranquility, and beauty for tourists.”

 He confirmed that the work will start as soon as possible and that tourists can expect to see the benefits of the project as early as next year.

Regent Suwirta revealed, “During the Nusa Penida festival this October, the One Gate One Destination concept will be launched. It is hoped that this concept will reduce and even prevent levy leaks in the field.” 

“All the government’s good intentions to organize this destination are aimed at making the life of Nusa Penida tourism longer.” 

The Head of the Klungkung Tourism Department, Made Sulistyawati, also made statements during the budget announcement and confirmed that the plans are still in the socialization phase and that the project will go ahead with consultation with the local community of Karangdawa in Bunga Meker Village.

Sulistyawati told the media, “This is just the planning stage and why is Kelingking Beach prioritized? Because this object is not only the most visited by tourists, but it is also the most vulnerable to accidents by tourists while on holiday, especially foreigners.”

He echoed statements made by Regent Suwirta, that tourists can expect to pay a small entry fee at each of Nusa Penida’s famous landmarks from now on.

He explained, “The way to do this is after the start of the One Gate One Destination system, namely the change in the previous fee levy at the port of IDR 25,000 per tourist to Nusa Penida, it will be changed to a levy at each tourist attraction.”

This is just one of many changes happening in Nusa Penida at the moment that will directly impact the tourist experience.

Leaders are in the process of creating legislation that will protect the island under geopark status, which will help protect the iconic landscape for many generations to come.
