If you are coming to Bali in the next couple of weeks, you’re going to need to make sure that you have your accommodation booked in advance.

If you’re a savvy planner, you may have every last moment of your trip to Bali already planned out, but if you’re a plan-as-you-go kinda traveler, you’re going to want to have a change of tact…just for a week or so. 

Although Bali is in low season right now, the island is preparing to welcome a huge influx of domestic tourists for the Lebaran holiday. Bali is a Hindu island, but Indonesia is a majority Muslim country.

The Lebaran holiday is one of the most important festivals in the Islamic calendar, and millions of Indonesian families will be traveling all over the country to celebrate Eid al-Fitr. 

In Indonesia, the Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha festivals are referred to as the Lebaran holiday. This year the Lebaran holiday will start on 19th April, and end on 25th April. The Islamic holy days fall on the 22nd and 23rd of April.

Over the course of the holiday, millions of Indonesian citizens travel all across the country, and many choose to spend the Lebaran holiday in Bali. Speaking to reporters on behalf of the Denpasar City Tourism Office, MA Dezire Mulyani said, “Our predictions [show an] increase in domestic tourists; predictions can be up to 80-90 percent.”

Mulyani continued to explain, “This Eid holiday is expected to support hotel occupancy and other tourism. This is because tourism actors have long dreamed of tourism recovering as before.” In fact, the predictions for the number of arrivals in Bali for Eid al-Fitr are set to reach pre-pandemic levels.

Many hotels in Bali’s most popular tourist resort areas are already fully booked, with many more set to reach occupancy in the run-up to the festival itself. The Deputy Governor of Bali, Cok Ace, has told reporters about the predictions for hotel occupancy in the coming weeks. 

The Deputy Governor explained that the increases in hotel occupancy is variable throughout Bali, with the most popular coastal regions receiving the greatest boost in bookings. Cok Ace told reporters, “Usually before Covid-19, during Eid 2019 and 2018, regionally there was an increase of up to 20 percent.”

He continued, “for the previous Eid, according to regional distribution, Nusa Dua and Kuta could increase by 20 percent. For Ubud, Candi Dasa, the increase was around 5 percent.”

At first glance, a 5-20% increase in hotel occupancy may not seem like too much of a big deal, but in reality, this increase translates to mean that many of the island’s small, budget-friendly guesthouses, private rentals, and even bigger resorts get fully booked. 

Cok Ace noted that as the Indonesian economy continued to recover from the impacts of the pandemic, more families will be able to travel for Eid al-Fitr this year compared to last year.

He said, “Hopefully now the domestic conditions are getting better, and the economy is getting better. We hope that the increase will be higher during Eid are domestic tourists.”

Officials in Bali are predicting that there will be a huge surge in domestic arrivals overland, with many families choosing to drive to Bali from Java and catch the ferry to Gilimanuk.

I Gusti Ngurah Rai Suryawijaya, speaking on behalf of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association for Badung, said, “Our estimate is that domestic tourists alone can reach 18,000 to 20,000 people per day. Domestic tourists mostly come during Eid.”

He continued, “Usually, many people use private cars…Likewise, if tourist visits increase via air flights, there will also be a lot of travel cars near the holiday.”

The Minister for Tourism and Creative Economies, Sanidaga Uno, has predicted that Eid-related travel will generate IDR 150 trillion in 2023. He told tourism operators to ensure that high-quality service remains a priority.

Minister Uno said, “Don’t let prices rise, but the quality and service are still lacking. It is also necessary to pay attention to the capabilities of the community, even during the holidays, don’t make it a burden for people who want to take a vacation.”
