Bali is a paradise for nature lovers. From rugged clifftops to volcano peaks, from dense tropical jungle to stunning rice terraces, the island is perfect for anyone who wants to reconnect with their wild side.
Have you ever heard of the Bali Starling? This tiny bird has recently been saved from extinction, and now nature lovers from around the world are traveling to the island to catch a glimpse.
The Bali Starling was saved from the brink of extinction by conservationists around the world. The bird now has two main strongholds in Bali, one in Nusa Penida and the other in the stunning West Bali National Park.
Whether you’re a birder or not, it doesn’t matter; if you love wild landscapes and a bit of adventure, a visit to the West Bali National Park is for you.
What makes the story of the recovery of the Bali Starling so cool is that the community played a huge role in reintroducing them to their natural habitat. In 2015, there were only 57 known Bali Starlings residents in West Bali National Park.
Thanks to the collective effort of villagers from Desa Belimbing Sari, Ekasari, Melaya, Gilimanuk, Sumberkelampok, and Pejarakan, all of which surround the national park, the population boomed to 303 by 2020.
The communities are managing a captive breeding program. Every year around 60 Bali Starling eggs are hatched. Once the birds are around 11 months old, they are released into the wild.
Bright, perfect white in color, with a striking turquoise blue around the eye, the Bali Starlings are captivating to observe.
The bird is also known as the Bali Myna and is referred to locally as Jalak Bali. The West Bali National Park is an incredible landscape to explore. A walking tour is the best way to cover the ground, and there are all kinds of other birds and wildlife to discover.

Naturalists have recorded over 160 different animal species in West Bali National Park, this included the rusa deer, large flying fox, and leopard cats. Bird species are pretty incredible, too, including the magnificent crested serpent eagle, sacred kingfisher, and savannah nightjar.
The forested landscape of West Bali National Park is really just the tip of the iceberg of this natural wonder.
For as much life can be found on land can be found beneath the waves that lap against the western tip of the island. West Bali National Park is famous for its conservation of the Bali Starling and its incredible diving spots.

Hawksbill turtles are regularly sighted during diving expeditions around the island, and monitor islands lurk in the shadows of the treelined shorelines.
Whether you’re a trained scuba diver or just enjoy snorkeling, during a trip to West Bali National Park, make sure to schedule a day tour out to the waters around Menjangan Island.
Diving in West Bali National Park is an experience often overlooked by tourists. Many divers head straight over to the east to Amed to go diving or hop over the Nusa Penida to swim with the Manta Rays.
At first glance, West Bali National Park may appear to be an off-the-beaten-track destination.
While it’s certainly less popular than the big resort areas of southern Bali, west Bali is home to a series of seriously luxurious hotels, resorts, and private villas.
If you’re planning a trip to West Bali, take a look at room availability at Sumberkima Hill Resort, which sits about 20km from the entrance to the park.
This breathtakingly beautiful hilltop retreat has some of the most impressive private villas on the whole island.
The resort is proud to encourage guests to get out and explore. With the help of the Sumberkima Hill Resort team, you can take a kayak tour of Sumberkima Bay and the mangrove forest.
Nature lovers understandably want to stay as close as possible to the national park to make the most of their time in West Bali. If this sounds like you, check out NusaBay Menjangan by WHM.
This stylish resort is located inside West Bali National Park itself and is the perfect launchpad for all those wild adventures in the jungle and on the water.

More nonsense about tourists and nature on Bali. The majority cannot recognise a sparrow, and definitely not the endemic rice finch species which are everywhere. Nor do they care. I have seen virtually no tourists ever in Permuteran, the nearest place to stay for the National Park. They all go to filthy, extremely polluted Lovina to harass the local dolphins. I am a lifelong birdwatcher and I certainly know the history of the Bali Mynah. Your article is very economical with the truth. In fact many of these captive bred birds are caught each year by unscrupulous bird catchers, which Bali and Indonesia are notorious for amongst Conservationists. There is also a similar project for a related endangered bird, the Black Winged Mynah, with releases on Nusa Penida. The locals catch them immediately. There is a Homestay owner on Jalan Legian, Ubud, with one in a cage on show right now. He is so certain of not being arrested that he told me that he got it on that little island. No laws are ever enforced on disgusting Bali. Please stop your ridiculous advertising about Bali. It is a mess right now, filthy everywhere, nothing has been maintained since 2020 and the locals don't give a damn about conservation. Every Balinese house has cages of wild caught, illegal birds. Start to tell the truth!!!

So why is this resort located INSIDE a NATIONAL PARK?

@Exp, Exactly right Exp. Like everywhere else on Bali this "eco resort" has no sewage treatment system and unspeakable sewage effluent leaks straight into the nearest fresh water courses and into the sea. The bay on the east side of the National park, encompassing Permuteran, is seriously polluted with everything from the obvious, used, disposable nappies, to invisible chemical pollutants. Horrific!!!

Getting close. Just down the road is Lovina. Maybe tomorrow we will finally have an article and free advertising on Lovina. Yes, the Menjangan area is nice to visit. And there are wonderful small cabins at around $30/n. Everything doesn't have to be about staying at pricey resorts.
