Bali Authorities Commit To Improve Safety In Nusa Penida After Tourist Death

Local leaders in Bali are calling on the regency government to take urgent action to increase safety measures at Nusa Penida’s famous Broken Beach. The calls come in the hours after a tourist from India tragically fell to his death from the cliff top of the popular photo spot. The 33-year-old man, known by his initials AB, was traveling in Bali with his partner.

On Saturday 4th, March an Indian tourist, who is known to the media by his initial AB, was visiting Nusa Penida along with his partner and their tour guide. At around 4.30 pm couple was taking photos at the popular Broken Beach cliff top that towers 40m above the ocean below.

It is believed that AB lost his balance and fell over the cliff’s edge. The couple’s tour guide, Komanag Sana, is reported to have lurched to grab hold of AB as he fell. Tragically, Sana was only able to grab hold of AB’s leg and was unable to take the weight of his falling body in one hand.

The police and search and rescue authorities were immediately alerted to the incident. An evacuation mission was launched as soon as possible, which lasted long into the evening. Speaking to the media to confirm the order of events, Nusa Penida Police Chief Kompol Ida Bagus Putra Sumerta said, “The victim had a tour by visiting tourist attractions in the east of Nusa Penida such as Diamond and Atuh Beach. Then in the afternoon, to the western area of Nusa Penida, namely Klingking and Broken Beach.”

Sumerta continued ‘At that time, the victim was about to be photographed by the guide (I Komang Sana) on a cliff, with the background of the beach.” He told reporters how Sana saw AB begin to lose his balance and moved forward to reach out to help him. Sumerta said, “After getting the information about the incident, our personnel rushed to the scene. The terrain conditions are quite difficult because the victim is at the bottom of a steep cliff. We also coordinate with the SAR Team to evacuate the victim’s body.”

Once on the scene, the official evacuation mission began at 5.20 pm. Two search and rescue officers abseiled down the cliff face, but given the precarious and dangerous position in which AB fell, the evacuation mission continued until 9.30 pm.

The incident has led local senators to call on the regency government to increase safety measures in Nusa Penida. Member of the Klungkung council, I Made Jana, has asked the regency government to install safety fences at Broken Beach clifftop and other similar locations, as well as to call on tour guides to take safety briefings and tourist supervision more seriously. Finally, he urged all tourists to prioritize safety at all times.

Jana told reporters, “Although in some cases the accident was caused by carelessness from the tourists themselves, this also shows our unpreparedness in maintaining comfort and safety.” Speaking separately, the Head of Tourism of Klungkung, Ni Made Sulistiawati, confirmed that he and his teams have plans to gradually increase safety measures at all of the island’s major tourist attractions, including Broken Beach. He said that these improvements would include the installation of fences in all areas where accidents have occurred.

At the end of January, authorities in Nusa Penida banned tourists from swimming at three of the island’s most famous beaches. In light of half a dozen serious callouts for the local search and rescue team in Nusa Penisa, local leaders banned swimming at Kelingking Beach, Diamond Beach, and Angel Billabong Beach.
