Heavy Rain Forecast On New Year’s Eve In Bali

The Center for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics for Bali (BMKG) has released the weather forecast for New Year’s Eve, and it’s looking like it’s going to be a wet one! Bali is in the middle of monsoon season, but this week’s storms have impacted holiday maker’s plans more so than usual.

Over Christmas weekend Kuta Beach saw a drop in visitors to the area at the moment tourist activity was supposed to be reaching its peak. Now, business owners and tourism operators are concerned that more bad weather could dampen spirits over the New Year.

Speaking to local reporters, I Gusti Ayu Putu Putri Astiduari from the BMKG Bali, shared what the forecast is looking like.

He said, “In general, for Saturday 31st and the new year on Sunday 1st, rain is still being observed, which is not evenly distributed throughout Bali, it will be [spread throughout] the morning, afternoon, evening, and night. Especially for the southern part of Bali, especially for the southern waters, there is still the potential for moderate rain, which can be accompanied by thunder or lightning”.

He further warned that conditions at sea would be rough and unpredictable. The weather agency is predicting high and dangerous waves across Bali Province, including the outlying islands like Nusa Penida. Astiduari said that waves could reach 3.5 meters from Thursday 29th, through to Monday 2nd. With the worst go, the high waves hitting Bali’s southern and northern coasts.

Astiduari explained, “The reason is that in general Bali is currently experiencing the rainy season from the westerly monsoon so that Bali generally has potentials that can help cloud growth and also from this westerly wind it can cause stronger winds”.

He warned that windspeed could reach 36km/hr in places and urged the public to exercise caution, explaining, “Because if there are especially strong winds, there is a high potential for trees to fall, then this heavy rain can potentially cause the bridge to be flooded or torn down. It can also cause landslides or floods.”

Astidurai urged the public to keep an eye on the up-to-the-minute weather forecast before making plans. He said, “we always update and urge the public to continue to monitor the results of our forecasts. It can be from social media, from radio from BMKG, and we are also currently working with television stations. So people can update weather information on these channels”.

News of forecasted storms and heavy rains may impact the New Year’s Eve celebrations planned around the island. There are only seven venues in Badung Regency that have been granted permission to hold fireworks displays at midnight. Head of Badung Satpol PP, I Gusti Agung Ketut Suryanegara, told the press on Wednesday that only venues with permission from the civil service can put on fireworks displays.

He confirmed that the venues with the relevant licenses are Finns Beach Club, Atlas Beach Club, and Morabito in Canggu. In Nusa Dua, Pandawa Beach and Canna Bali Beach Club have been granted permission to hold a fireworks show, as well as the GWK Cultural Central, which will host the island’s biggest New Year’s Eve event. At Kuta Beach, the Regent of Badung will host his public New Year’s celebration.

Suryanegara confirmed that an additional 160 security officers will be deployed in the busiest areas of Badung on the big night.

He explained, “There are five integrated cross-agency posts, namely in Jimbaran, Kuta Art Market, next to Kuta Beachwalk, Tibubeneng, and Mengwi Terminal. These five locations become the central points of human movement at the turn of the year…We hope that community leaders will play a role, including Pecalang and Sipandu Adat, according to their respective functions and duties.”
