A Nigerian man has been deported from Bali after an overstay of over 900 days. The 30-year-old man only known to the media by his initials EEA was deported on Tuesday 2nd August to Abuja in Nigeria. The Head of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights Bali, Anggiat Napitupulu, confirmed the case to local newspaper reporters.

According to Napitupulu, EEA had entered Indonesia on a 30-day B211 Visit Visitor sponsored by a company by the name of PT. AMS. He initially landed at Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Jakarta before later traveling to Bali.

It is believed that EEA came to Indonesia with the intention to do business in the textiles industry. He was apparently looking to buy children’s clothing in Indonesia and export them back to Nigeria for reselling.

The B211 Visit Visa was valid for just 30-days, since he arrived in Indonesia on the 23rd of July 2019, he was required to leave the country on or before the 21st of August 2019. Napitupulu confirmed that EEA did not make any attempts to extend his visa.

It transpired that EEA did not return to Nigeria because his business operations took a turn for the worst and he ran out of money. This is when he began committing online fraud in a bid to generate funds, yet he showed no sign of leaving.

The authorities shares how EEA is suspected of committing online fraud against women in Indonesia. It is believed he instigates a series of online romantic relationships with women in Bali. Under the guise of falling in love with them, he ordered his victims to send him money. Despite questions, Naptiupulu did not share anything further on the matter.

EEA was deported from Bali on Super Air Jet flight IU741 from Ngurah Rai International Airport. This leg goes on the journey from Bali to Soekarno Hatta International Airport, Jakarta. He then boarded a connecting Ethiopian Airlines flight to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. The final leg of his journey was from Addis Ababa to the Nigerian capital city Abuja.

EEA has been added to the Indonesian black list, and will not be permitted to return. He was accompanied through Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport by two officials from the Denpasar Immigration Office. Officials did not give any background as to how they tracked him down, or whether any justice will be sought for the women impacted by EEA’s fraudulent endeavors

Bali, and Indonesia as a whole, regularly deport people who have overstayed their visas. While any length of overstay is illegal, overstays of over 60-days are the cases of most concern to the Indonesian authorities.

The deportation process is lengthy and often results in the person whose being deported being held in immigration detention centers for months upon months as paperwork is filed. In cases where individuals cannot pay an overstay fine, or pay for their own flight out of Indonesia, the process is even longer.

On the 18th of July 2022, Bali Immigration deported an Egyptian man who had overstayed his visa on arrival by over 2-years. The man known also by his initials KMHHM is thought to have married an Indonesian woman but failed to ensure that his visas were up to date. He handed himself into the Denpasar Immigration Office on the 22nd of December 2021, claiming he had no money and no way to leave Indonesia.

There are dozens of individuals being held at Immigration Detention centers across Indonesia, including Bali, awaiting deportation flights. Overstaying visas is taken seriously in Indonesia and travelers are reminded that it is their responsibility to check the validity of their visas and the conditions of their visas.

Some visa categories in Indonesia can be extended, while others cannot, some can be extended one time only while others can be extended multiple times. The visa on arrival, which is available for travelers from 75 countries is valid for 30-days and can be extended at an immigration office for an additional 30-days only. The application for extension must be submitted before the initial 30-days on the visa expires.
