The Manager of Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), Hendra Irawan, confirmed that several dogs were found abandoned by their caretaker inside a house in Tabanan. Seven of them have already passed away by the time they were found. This garnered a backlash from animal lover communities on the island.

An investigation started when villagers became suspicious as they started to smell a strong stench from the house where several dogs had been spotted living inside several weeks prior. The officials from BAWA immediately went to the scene after receiving the report.

The officials broke into the house after asking for permission from the local authority and the police. They were shocked when they spotted 3 starving dogs struggling to live and 7 other dogs who seemed to have died months ago.

“We rescued two of the dogs and transported them to the vet for medical attention as they were both weak and starving. The other one was adopted by local people around the area. We also found seven dogs who passed away as they were locked inside cages and the bathroom,” Hendra said.

The Founder of Animals Hope Shelter, Christian Joshua Pale, posted on his Instagram that these dogs were the victims of a rescuer with the initials ANTM. Expats entrusted their pets to ANTM before going back to their home countries, and they paid him cash to care for the dogs.

Joshua and a team from BAWA plan to file a report to the police regarding this incident.

Foreigners on tourist visas should not be able to “rescue” or buy animals. Every animal must be licensed spayed and neutered. Problem solved.
