The Public Works and Residential Ministry has planned to build a special lane for bicycles on the upcoming Bali toll-road project this year.
The Minister of Public Works and Residential Ministry, Basuki Hadimuljono, confirmed that a toll road connecting Mengwi and Gilimanuk Ports in Western Bali would be the first in Indonesia with a dedicated lane for cyclists.
“The toll road will begin development by June this year and will have a special lane for cyclists,” Basuki said on Tuesday (8/3). The Minister initiated this to boost tourism once the construction is done by November 2024.
Basuki also explained that the toll road was to be developed in the middle of the island. However, this plan was revised as it might create environmental damage. All the officials eventually agreed to build it along the coastline in the southern part of the island.
Meanwhile, the Head of Toll Road Management, Danang Parikesit, stated that this project was also initiated to reduce the travel time for the vehicles from Gilimanuk to Denpasar and vice versa.
“Travel time from Gilimanuk to Denpasar, Badung, and Tabanan usually takes 6 hours. This will be reduced to 2 hours with the toll road,” Danang said.
The construction will be divided into three different phases: Gilimanuk-Pekutatan (54.7 km), Pekutatan-Soka (23.17 km), and Soka-Mengwi (18.9 km). The estimated total cost is USD $1.72 billion (IDR 24.6 trillion).

Especially interesting for scenes imitators (bicycle accident) of movie “Eat, Pry, Love”. - Can be a sale booster for electric bicycles also.
