Bali officials have recently stated that construction for utilizing electric trains in Bali is expected to begin by 2023.
The Head of Bali Transportation Agency, I Gede Wayan Samsi Gunarta confirmed that infrastructure development to utilize the electric train as a new transportation mode in Bali is expected to begin by 2023. “After successfully operating our Trans Metro Dewata public buses in Bali, we also plan to provide electric trains as another option of public transportation on the island,” Samsi said on Friday (22/10).
The train was selected as a future transportation mode in Bali due to limited space on the island, which makes it more difficult to develop other types of public transportation. He also urged the other government-related institutions to begin their preparation stages in regard to this project. “We need to assure that this project will be started by 2023, so we need to begin our urban mobility research as well as look for investors for funding,” Samsi added.
Despite needing massive investments, Samsi admitted that several potential investors were interested in supporting this project. “We have several potential investors but we haven’t determined the best type of railway and technology for this train, as the amount of investments needed depends on what technology we will use. The technology could be underground, directly on the ground like regular railways, or perhaps above the road. But so far, the regular railway system appears to be our cheapest option.” Samsi concluded.
