Bali Police Officer Potentially Faces 20 Years Imprisonment For Drug Trafficking

    A 47-year-old police officer named I Gusti Ngurah Menara from Karangasem has attended his first trial after recently getting arrested for drug trafficking in Bali.

An attorney from the Denpasar Legal Aid Center, Pipit Prabhawanty who provides assistance to the suspect during the trial confirmed that Menara and his lawyer have accepted the charges from the prosecutor. “We have heard the charges from the prosecutor who demanded our client be sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment to be held responsible for getting involved with drug trafficking in Bali.” Pipit said on Friday (6/8).

 Prior to the trial, the suspect who had been serving as a Bali police officer was arrested by the Denpasar Police Department along with drugs that he planned to distribute in the Denpasar area. The suspect was asked by a fugitive named Putu to move a 100 gram package of crystal meth into the bushes around Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai Sanur, Denpasar. After moving the package from that location, he brought it to his house that is located on Cempaka Housing Complex in Marga, Tabanan.

    Shortly after, he split the package into 51 smaller packages with various weights on each of them, and kept the remaining 70grams of meth in his house. A couple days later on May 8th 2021, Putu called the suspect to deliver some packages to the Kebrobokan and Jalan Gatot Subroto Barat area. The suspect was finally arrested around the Gatot Subroto Barat area along with the meth that he had been carrying with him. During the interrogation, he admitted that he still had more drugs in his house, so the police went to his place and seized it as evidence.   During the arrest, the officers managed to seize 52 packages of meth weighing a total of 84.34 grams from the suspect.
