6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Has Shaken South Bali

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of South Java island on Saturday (10/4) and shook the southern part of Bali.

The Head of Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) for Denpasar III area, Iman Faturahman said that the earthquake shook two southern regions of Bali, Badung and Denpasar. “It shook Badung and Denpasar around 3:00pm, causing many people to flee buildings to seek safety.” Iman said. Some people said that the recent earthquake was considered strong in comparison to an earthquake that previously shook the island.

Iman explained that this 6.1 magnitude earthquake didn’t generate any large waves from the ocean. “According to our analysis, this earthquake will not generate a tsunami from the ocean.” Iman added. The epicenter of the recent earthquake that lasted around 30 seconds was located 96 kilometers off the coast of South Malang, East Java with 80 kilometers in depth. Based on their observation, the incident was classified as a medium earthquake due to the subduction activity.

Several regions in the southern part of Indonesia such as Malang, Blitar, Kediri, Denpasar, Badung, Klungkung, Tabanan, Lombok and Sumbawa were shaken by the earthquake that day. According to surveillance from BMKG, they didn’t find any sign of aftershocks. There were no reports regarding any deaths or physical injury from the earthquake, but officials keep warning the people to stay alert and avoid any buildings that won’t be strong enough to hold another earthquake.
