Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds caused a number of disasters at several points in Karangasem. One of them was a fallen tree that hit a truck as it passed on Jalan Raya Telaga, Sibetan Village, Bebandem District, last Sunday (28/2).
Kernet I Wayan Nuri Astawa (33), a resident of Banjar Dinas Bungkulan, Seraya Barat Village, Karangasem, died on the spot after being hit by the tree. The vehicle driver Kadek Juliawan (30) a resident of Banjar Dukuh, Bebandem, Karagasem, suffered minor injuries.
BPBD, police, and local residents worked together to carry out evacuation steps to remove two passengers. It took a long time to remove the two victims by cutting off the hood of the truck, which was already damaged from impact by the gempong tree, 80 cm in diameter and 20 meters in height.
“The truck that carried tons of rice was wrecked, and it took some times to evacuate the body from the truck because the officers from Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and Search and Rescue (SAR) Team had to cut the log first in order to get them out of there,” Officer Astawa said.
The Leader of Karangasem SAR, I Gusti Ngurah Eka Wiyadnyana explained that the evacuation process took around 30 minutes.
“The driver was rushed to the nearby clinic to get medical assistance once he was evacuated, and he had a small cut on his forehead,” Wiyadnyana concluded.
