Drivers faced hours of traffic after a large tree collapsed from the rainstorm, blocking the main access point between Denpasar and Gilimanuk on Wednesday evening (3/2).
Heavy rain and strong winds occurred in most areas of Bali, leading numerous trees to collapse and damage infrastructure.
In effect, the road in East Selemadeg Tabanan, which is the main access point used to transport cargo and passengers between Gilimanuk and Denpasar, was closed for two hours.
The road closure caused traffic congestion that lasted for hours as authorities faced difficulty evacuating logs from the road.
The Head of East Selemadeg Police Department, AKP Ida Bagus Mahendra, explained that the Albasia tree collapsed at 6:30 pm amidst the storm.
“Many people tried to lift their motorbike and jump to the other side of the road in order to continue their trip because it took quite a while for authorities to clear the road,” Mahendra said on Thursday (4/2).
Upon receiving a report regarding the incident, officers immediately called the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to help remove the tree.
Cars were stopped for over 2 hours due to the incident.
The Head of Emergency and Logistic from Tabanan BPBD, I Putu Trisna Widiatmika, said that he deployed 12 officers to cut the logs and relocate them on the side of the road.
“Numerous natural disasters have occurred in several areas of Tabanan District since the beginning of this year. The most dangerous areas are Baturiti and Pupuan because the land on the mountain is unstable so landslides could happen at any time. I’ve warned them to stay alert” Widiatmika concluded.
