Traffic Congestion Impacts Tourists Exploring Top West Bali Destinations

Share The Article

Traffic congestion is part and parcel of visiting Bali, but this week in particular, tourists should be aware that it could get pretty intense.

Though Bali will fall still and silent on Thursday for Nyepi, the most important day of the year, the number of travelers will increase significantly in the days before and after, due to Eid al-Fitr, which will be celebrated on Saturday.

Bali is set to see 1.7 million people depart the island this week as residents travel across the country to visit family and friends and go on vacation over the Eid al-Fitr holiday. There will also be a huge influx of domestic tourists traveling to Bali to spend the national holiday in Indonesia’s flagship destination.

While a large number of tourists will travel domestically by air, many millions will travel overland nationwide. Bali’s Gilimanuk Harbor will be the busiest gateway to the island for domestic travel this week, and over the weekend, queues reached over 30km in length as cars backed up waiting for ferries to East Java. Similarly, traffic has been mounting in Banyuwangi as travelers depart for West Bali.

West and Northwest Bali, and Southwest Bali will be particularly congested with traffic this week, in addition to the usual rush hour tourist and commuter traffic congestion in top resorts like Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu, Kuta, and of course Denpasar.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, 15th March, Jembrana Regency Police Chief, Adjunct Senior Commissioner of Police (AKBP) Kadek Citra Dewi Suparwati, explained, “The estimated peak of homecoming traffic from Bali is indeed today.

The benchmark for travelers from Bali is not Eid al-Fitr but Nyepi Day.” With Nyepi Day being observed in Bali on 19th March, many travelers have been aiming to get to Bali ahead of the Day of Silence.

He confirmed that the 30km traffic queue has been mitigated by dividing traffic by vehicle type to help keep travelers moving. More traffic officers have also been deployed to Gilimanuk and along the Gilimanuk-Denpasar Highway.

Speaking separately, Buleleng Regency Police Chief AKBP Ruzi Gusman confirmed that, as part of Operation Ketupat Agung 2026, the Buleleng Police have deployed 241 officers, supported by officers from other agencies, including local governments, cross-sectoral agencies, the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), and other community organisational teams.

The Avoidance: The central south resorts (Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Uluwatu) will be completely overwhelmed by typical rush hour and Eid holiday crowds.
The Destination: Head to West Bali (Pemuteran, Lovina, National Park). It is far less built-up, offering a deeper, undisturbed sense of calm during the Day of Silence.

AKBP Gusman explained, “Two major holidays coincide this year, so we are implementing a number of security strategies for all public activities during Operation Ketupat Agung.”

He added, “We urge the entire community to work together to maintain harmony, security, and order so that all activities during this period run smoothly.”

Tourists traveling to West Bali are advised to leave extra time to travel by road. Destinations in North and West Bali, such as West Bali National Park, Pemuteran, and Lovina, still feel pretty quiet, since most of the traffic is heading towards Denpasar and the resorts of the central south.

It is important for tourists who are planning on moving around the island this week to be aware that while Nyepi rules are observed from 6 am on 19th March, road closures come into effect from 4 pm on the 18th. It is highly advisable that tourists are in position for Nyepi by early afternoon on Wednesday.

West-Bali-National-Park

West Bali is a beautiful place to spend Nyepi and this special time of year. West Bali is typically less crowded and is far less built up than the central south of Bali.

This means that when Nyepi arrives, there is an even deeper sense of calm and stillness that falls over this part of the island.

As destinations all along the central south will feel busier over the Eid al-Fitr holidays, for those seeking to avoid the crowds while still immersing in Balinese and Indonesian culture, West Bali is the destination of choice!
