Tourist Transportation Across Bali Impacted By Extreme Weather

Share The Article

More than four days of heavy rain in Bali have caused widespread flooding across the central south of the island. While both local community members and tourists are being evacuated from their homes and accommodation, response teams are working around the clock to ensure public safety.

The flooding is having a huge impact on mobility across the island, with both Bali Airport, Sanur Port and Nusa Penida Harbor impacted by the torrent of extreme weather.

Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport has been impacted by this week’s extreme weather. While normal service has resumed, tourists set to travel through the terminals this week are advised to check in with their airline prior to traveling to the airport. The Head of Communications and Legal at Bali Airport, Gede Eka Sandi Asmadi, told reporters that several flights were impacted by the extreme weather conditions in the last few days.

The impacted flights included Tuesday’s Cebu Pacific Manila-Denpasar service, which was unable to land in Bali and was diverted to Makassar. Followed by the Indonesia AirAsia Phuket-Denpasar service, which was diverted to Jakarta for more than six hours before being able to safely arrive in Bali.

Asmadi reassured travelers that Bali Airport is in round-the-clock contact with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, as well as AirNav Indonesia, to ensure the safety of all passengers, crew, and aircraft. Asmadi explained,  “We also ensure that the infrastructure and supporting facilities at the terminal remain in top condition to ensure optimal service quality for airport users.”

He concluded, “All Ngurah Rai Airport users are advised to arrive early and monitor traffic conditions to ensure a smooth journey. We also urge users to coordinate with their airlines for the latest flight information.”

It is not only air travel that has been impacted by the extreme weather, but fast boat and ferry crossings too. Four crossings from Nusa Penida were cancelled on Tuesday, 24th February, and with more extreme weather forecast, tourists are urged to check in with their fast boat providers prior to traveling to the port.

Speaking to reporters, Ni Luh Putu Eka Suyasmin, Head of the Nusa Penida Ports, said that every decision to postpone crossings is made through multiple considerations, including weather forecasts, actual conditions at the port, captain reports, and coordination with the destination port. “This departure delay is based on the BMKG forecast, weather conditions at the port, reports on water conditions from the captain, and coordination with the destination port.”

A flurry of Bali tourists had traveled to the Gili Islands and Lombok to try to avoid this week’s extreme weather, though the decision is not proving all that fruitful.

Heavy rains and strong winds are also being recorded across the West Nusa Tenggara region, as well as on Bali’s outlying Nusa Islands.

Tourists traveling to Bali in the coming weeks must be aware that while the peak of the rainy season has passed, heavy rains, strong winds, and electrical storms are likely until the end of March and into early April.

With rainy season arriving earlier than usual in late 2025, there is also no telling yet whether this rainy season will come to a close during its typical time frame.

Tourists traveling to Bali must have fully comprehensive medical and travel insurance and understand how to make a claim in the event of an emergency.

Tourists should check that coverage for extreme weather and natural disasters is included in the policy.
