Share The Article

Local communities in Bali responsible for small and emerging tourism developments on the islands are turning to social media to help visitors find their off-path destinations.

Indonesia is one of the world’s largest users of Instagram and TikTok, and social media has long proven to be a valuable tool for #TravelInspiration.

Bali’s most popular tourism region is Badung Regency, home to destinations like Canggu, Seminyak, Legian, Kuta, and Uluwatu.

Yet there are other regencies in Bali that have so much to offer international and domestic visitors but that often get overlooked simply because they are not online and available to be easily found by travelers in the digital age.

Speaking to reporters, the Head of the Klungkung Tourism Village Communication Forum explained, “We asked for help from friends, travel agent acquaintances, tour guides, including freelance tour guides.”

They are seeking support to best utilize social media as a promotional tool in the tourism space. With limited funds for marketing, social media is a real asset for small and emerging tourism attractions and experiences in Bali.

Malendra is one of the teams that managed Bakas Tourism Village, close to Semarapura and around a 50-minute drive from central Ubud.

He noted that most tourists who come to Bakas Tourism Village do so specifically to enjoy the rural location of the community and enjoy time in nature.

Activities on offer are really authentic, and tourists are invited to take part in the village’s day-to-day activities as they happen. Activities include learning to play in the traditional gamelan orchestra, cooking classes, dance classes, and even making kits.

Malendra explained “we always try to make visitors feel and have their own experience. “That’s why tourist villages must maintain their existing uniqueness.” He also wants to see Bakas Traditional Village help support even more emerging tourism villages in the Klungkung Regency area.

He shared that Tihingan Tourism Village is famous in Bali for being an icon of gamelan or gong crafts. Then in Kamasan Village, there are Kamasan classic wayang paintings and other crafts.

Malednra explained, “Of course, they all have their own characteristics which become ‘icons’ of the tourist village in question.”

Bali tourists are also being encouraged to take the opportunity to get off the beaten path and support emerging tier villages, whether in the east, west, or north of the island.

Up in Buleleng Regency which spans much of the north and west of the island, tourism leaders are also calling for more support to help promote tourism attractions in the area to a wider audience.

The Head of Public Relations of the Bali Province Indonesian Tourist Guide Association, Suarma, said “In our view, stronger promotion is needed.

The government, in this case the Buleleng Regency Government, through the Regional Tourism Promotion Agency (BPPD) might be able to collaborate with stakeholders, for example with associations, as well as academic circles for this (promotion).”

In Buleleng Regency, there is so much cultural heritage and natural beauty for tourists to explore. Lovina Beach is the most famous resort in the north of Bali.

Tourism leaders want to see the area known locally as Den Bukit become a real magnet for tourism, too.

Singaraja City in the north of Bali, once the provincial capital and still known as Little Sunda, is another untapped gem when It comes to cultural heritage tourism,

One of the most engaging intermarry ideas that tourists can follow when planning a trip to Bali is to spend the first week of a vacation hitting up all the major on path destinations, Ubud, Uluwatu and Canggu, and spend the second week exploring off the beaten path and supporting small and emerging destinations across the island.

You have to give a reason to go there. Just relying on some social media posts means bugger all. To have affect they need a platform to aggregate, exploit and sell.
