Seismic Activity And Major Floods In Indonesia Are An Important Warning For Bali Tourists

Share The Article

It is super important that tourists traveling to Bali in the coming weeks keep up to date with the latest news.

With seismic activity increasing nationwide and monsoon season floods sweeping multiple provinces, including Bali, it is vital that tourists understand what is happening on the ground.

It has been a week of heavy rains, intense flooding, and intense focus on the nation’s active volcanoes and most earthquake-prone regions.

The Bali Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BBKMG) has confirmed that Bali’s Buleleng Regency recorded a series of nine earthquakes between 26th and 27th November 2025.

The Head of the BBMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Early Information Working Group, Dwi Hartanto, told reporters, “The earthquakes that occurred were a shallow type due to an active fault.” The earthquakes were relatively small, but the tremors were still felt by those in the area, with magnitudes ranging between 1.8 and 2.9.

Seismic activity has been increasing worldwide in the last two weeks. Java’s Mount Semeru is still on the highest alert level after multiple eruptions starting on the 18th November 2025.

Internationally, Hayli Gubbi, a volcano in Ethiopia that had not erupted for over 10,000 years, exploded this week, sending ash clouds upwards of 15km into the air.

Mount Bezymianny in Russia and Mount Kīlauea in Hawai’i have also erupted this week. All these incidents have affected local communities and have the potential to cause major travel disruptions, which is why tourists need to be on high alert.

While Bali is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, it is also one that holds some of the highest natural disaster risk potential. Indonesia sits within the Pacific Ring of Fire and is home to 130 active volcanoes.

Bali alone is known to have 26 potential and active fault lines spread widely across the island. As cited by the BBKMG, these range from pinpoint to whole stretches of coastline, including Jimbaran, the East Coast of Bali, Mambal, the Northwest slope of Mount Agung, and South Seraya.

In no uncertain terms, Bali could experience a volcanic eruption or earthquake at any moment. While this information could easily incite panic, it is a simple fact of life for all those who live in Bali.

For tourists visiting Bali for the first time, this risk can be deeply unsettling, but this knowledge should not be a cause for fear; rather, it should be taken sensibly.

While tourists cannot control whether there is an earthquake, volcanic eruption, or natural disaster such as flooding in Bali or not, what they can do is put safeguards in place so that should such an event happen, they know what to do and how to access support.

It is not only seismic activity that tourists need to be aware of in Indonesia right now, but the impacts of the monsoon season, too. Heavy rains across the province have led to localised flooding throughout residential and resort areas since late September, and on 26th November, major flooding was recorded in Sayan Village, which neighbours Ubud.

The Acting Village Head of Sayan, Jro Mangku Ketut Gde Kesumawijaya, confirmed that the community rushed together to implement an emergency plan as flash flooding affected homes, restaurants, and tourism businesses in the area.

As flood waters began to subside on Thursday, Kesumawijaya confirmed that community leaders and residents will be putting mitigations in place as more rain is forecast.

In Sumatra, powerful storms have led to widespread flooding in Aceh Province, North Sumatra Province, and West Sumatra Porvcie and across the region.

In Aceh, 10 out of 23 districts declared an emergency on Wednesday, 26th November, with multiple devastating landslides recorded throughout the region.

It is clear that this monsoon season in Indonesia will be one of the most devastating on record, including in Bali.

Tourists traveling to the region are urged to ensure that they have fully comprehensive travel insurance and to be clear about how to make a claim and access help in the event of an emergency prior to traveling to Indonesia. Tourists should also ensure they know how to access consular support before they travel to Indonesia.
