The final figures for 2024 are from the Central Statistics Agency.
This fresh data explores everything connected to travel and tourism in Bali, and Indonesia overall.
The figures tell us more about traveler spending habits and how they have changed over the last 12 months.
The Central Statistics Agency has revealed that throughout 2024 the average expenditure of foreign tourists to Indonesia was USD 1,391, around IDR 22.8 million.
The Acting Head of the Central Statistics Agency, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, said that tourists’ spending was mostly on accommodation and food and beverages, with visits to attractions and travel experiences using up much less from tourists’ vacation budgets.
The cost of accommodation, food, and drinks makes up 57% of tourists spending. While the average spend over the course of the year was USD 1,391, during the Q4 of 2024 the average spend was reduced slightly to USD 1,287. The average length of stay was 10.39 nights.
Widyasanti told reporters that cumulatively, throughout 2024, the total number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia nationwide reached 13,902,420 visits, which is an increase of 19.05% compared to 2023.
She noted, “The achievement of foreign tourist visits in 2024 is the highest achievement in the last five years since 2020. However, it is still relatively lower when compared to 2019 before the pandemic, which reached 16.1 million visits.”
Nationally, the largest number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia throughout 2024 came from Malaysia, racking up up 2.278 million visits. Australian tourists made 1.67 million visits, and travelers from Singapore made 1.408 million visits. In terms of travel figures for Bali, Australian tourists were the most frequent international arrivals in 2024.
Looking at tourist spending habits across Indonesia in 2024, on average, foreign tourists from Malaysia spend around USD 693 USD, or IDR 11.39 million, during their visit. The foreign tourists who spent the most during their visits to Indonesia were from Switzerland.
Swiss tourists spend an average of USD 2,194 USD per stay, followed by tourists from the United States who spend an average of USD 2,182, in third place were tourists from Austria who spent an average of USD 2,175.
This is a big change in the high spending rankings compared to 2023 when Austrian tourists were found to be the biggest spending foreign tourists, who averaged a spend of USD 4,274 per visit. Austrian tourists in 2023 were closely followed by Swiss tourists who spent, on average, IDR 67.4 million, or USD 4,151, during their vacation or travel adventure in Indonesia.
In 2023 the top five biggest spenders list was completed by British tourists in third place, followed by Italian tourists in fourth place, and Norwegian tourists in fifth.
In December 2024, Bali revealed its provincial travel stats for the year gone by, and data showed that tourists heading to the island have been changing their spending habits.
The data, collated and analyzed by researchers from the UNUD Faculty of Tourism, Nyoman Ariana, Made Sarjana, IGB Arya Yudiastine, and Wayan Agung Panca, assessed travelers’ spending based on nine criteria.
In a press statement, Ariana explained, “It was found that spa and wellness activities tend to be increasingly popular with tourists visiting Denpasar. So spa, wellness tourism activities are important to be developed seriously in the future.”
It was also evident from the research released by the team from the UNUD Faculty of Tourism that how tourists plan and curate their travel experiences is changing too.
Ariana explained, “The difference found that foreign tourists seek information via Instagram and Facebook, while domestic tourists use Instagram and TikTok as sources of information. This can be taken into consideration by tourism attraction managers when promoting their tourism products.”
