More Updates Shared With Tourists On North Bali International Airport Plans

Share The Article

North Bali International Airport is a project that is back on the cards. The development has been given the go-ahead and then canceled, projected to be restarted, and then scrapped more times than we can count, but the new President, Prabowo Subianto, has given his word that he will make it happen.

More Updates Shared With Tourists On North Bali International Airport Plans

Ministers and regional leaders in Bali are now taking on the workload to bring the project to life. While nothing will happen overnight, there is an obvious shift in the way in which leaders are talking about the project now.

Both the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, and the Acting Governor of Bali, Sang Made Mahendra Jaya, shared positive remarks regarding the discourse on the North Bali Airport development project in Buleleng.

Minister Harimurti told reporters, “We continue to study because the feasibility study must also be carried out carefully.”

He noted that there will have to be plenty of planning, assessments, and feasibility tests completed before the first stone is laid.

He explained, “If all of that is ready by considering various aspects, technical aspects, political aspects, socio-cultural aspects, and others, I think that the airport can be realized.”

The Acting Governor of Bali, Sang Made Mahendra Jaya, spoke to reporters about the policies that would be needed to bring the project to life.

The Chairman of the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) of the Bali Region, I Made Rai Ridartha, also gave his insights on the project and spoke of the metrics by which he and his teams will assess whether Bali needs more airport capacity.

He also gave his support to President Subianto Prabowo and responded to his comments that Bali should become the new Singapore or Hong Kong with the presence of the new airport.

Ridartha said, “Two things that need to be considered in the statement are the first construction of North Bali Airport and the second is New Singapore. Of course, we can clearly see whether Bali really needs a new airport other than I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in the South.”

He added, “It does not mean that [all of] Bali will be like Singapore or Hong Kong, but efforts are made so that our airport service system and operations can follow the governance in Singapore or Hong Kong, which is so neat.”

Ridartha explained that there are four key indicators that Bali is nearly ready for a second international airport or vastly increased airport capacity.

The first, he noted, is airport traffic, explaining, “If we have boarded and waited for the take-off time for a long time, it means that there is a queue of planes that will enter the runway.”

The second he noted was crowding in the terminal building; he said, “Inside the terminal looks crowded and busy, even many prospective passengers may not be able to get a seat.”

He said the third indicator is traffic congestion in the airport parking and pick-up zones, and finally, traffic congestion on the roads around the airport.

Ridartha stated, “By looking at those four conditions, it can be said that the airport needs to be expanded. However, at the current Ngurah Rai Airport, the expansion is difficult to do, considering the limited land available. Unless you have to reclaim the sea.”

He was clear that the move to develop North Bali Airport can only be done in conjunction with major upgrades to supporting infrastructure.

Ridartha said “Building this airport is not only building an airport, but also must be prepared how connectivity from the airport or to the airport from the South, Central, to the North.”

He concluded,” Likewise, people who go down in the north will be able to go to the middle and south smoothly. Because when the airport is finished, the access must also be completed.”

Prabowo is Indonesia's Donald Trump. First thing he does as President is fly off around the world to appear important. And so many promises of what he's going to make happen. With Nusantara struggling and lacking funds. Where is all the money going to come from for all his other promises? Given the usual corrupt processes still in place you won't make silk purses from plastic rubbish and there's plenty of that in Indonesia.

North Bali Airport shall be a "private investment" with China providing funds and construction. The plan seems to take over around 3km coastline. So those having invested in villas and resorts in the area (Kubutiran?) will no longer enjoy sea view or the fruits of their hard works, as they will likely be bulldozed over.

This private effort must have fast tracked AMDAL (Environmental impact study) as plan is for one runway ready in 2027! I doubt they have consulted with all the landowners that will be affected. So expect trouble when the roid rage army (preman) is coming in to clear land.

What would be the point of that airport? There's nothing much in the north to attract a lot of visitors. Tourism in the south started due to world class surf. Which then followed with accommodations, services, etc.

In the north, even if you build some hotels and restaurants, etc.. why go there instead the south, or Singapore or anywhere else in Asia?

Small island with two airports is not economical. The second airport would never justify its means.

Apparently acting Bali gov. did not know that a MOU already signed and a Chinese contractor Chang Ye Construction Group, Co. Ltd. has been lined up coming with USD 3 Bn financing package.

All this orchestrated by a private company PT Bandara International Bali Utara (BIBU) Panji Sakti with a Javanese president director.

Just another Chinese belt and road project to saddle some developing country with forever debt for some infrastructure they do not need.

Again the Balinese run over by the Javanese and Chinese.

@Exp,

I didn't claim building an international airport was a private matter. I claimed the MOA was a private agreement between 2 entities.

At this stage no companies external entities have been given responsibility for developing or building the airport.

BIBU is a private company. Their choice of name was obviously chosen to suggest official connection.

LINK is their website. I've tried repeatedly to connect but get 'This site can’t be reached'. Perhaps you might have more luck.

@Shorty, Building an international airport is a "private matter"? Ha.

@Exp,

As I've posted many times but BS doesn't like. Jingoistic, scaremongering bullshit. It's just a MOA between 2 companies to boost their chances if and when tenders or quotes for airport work.

@Exp,

Speculative alarmist rubbish.

It's just a private MOA to boost BIBU's chances if and when tenders or quotes are eventually called for the construction or part thereof.

@Exp,

Why should the Acting Governor be aware of it? It's just an MOA between 2 private companies and doesn't involve government.

PT Bandara International Bali Utara (BIBU) Panji Sakti are showing they have financial backing to support any bids they may make, if and when the airport goes ahead.
