Indonesia Implements World First For AI-Enabled Immigration That Could Affect Bali Tourists

Indonesia has just launched a game-changing new immigration checkpoint system. The Indonesian Immigration is working to roll out its All Indonesia immigration protocol, which is set to bring huge benefits to both international and domestic travellers. Elements of the new All Indonesia program are already affecting Bali tourists.

Indonesia Immigration has just launched its new partnership with Amadeus to implement Seamless Corridors. These new Seamless Corridors are in place in Jakarta and Surabaya.

This is the world’s first, and the new biometric corridors allow for AI-enabled biometrics to validate passenger identities while on the move.

Essentially, for eligible travellers arriving in Jakarta and Surabaya, the days of presenting travel documents to Immigration officials or even scanning passports in autogates are over.

For now, this technology will be available for passengers traveling through Jakarta and Surabaya. Airports in Indonesia, with a focus on Hajj or pilgrimage travellers. During peak travel times, other eligible passengers could be directed through the Seamless Corridors, including international passengers whose biometrics are already in the system.

The technology is being praised for its ability to massively speed up the immigration check process while also being inclusive for a wide range of users, including the elderly and the disabled. Indonesia has the highest quota of Hajj pilgrims of any country in the world, with around 220,000 people travelling from across Indonesia to Saudi Arabia every year.

In a press statement, the Executive Vice President of Amadues, Rudy Daniello, shared, “The Seamless Corridor is the ‘jewel in the crown’ of our end‑to‑end portfolio for seamless travel, helping to remove friction and queues at the border.”

“In combination with innovations in digital identity and biometrics at key airport service points, it’s finally possible for airlines, airports, and governments to provide a truly seamless, secure experience, free from document checks, queues, and barriers.”

The rollout of the Seamless Corridor in Jakarta and Surabaya comes as Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai is on track to see another record-breaking year for traveler numbers.

While the Seamless Corridor will remain focused on Hajj pilgrims in Jakarta and Surabaya, with AI technology being more widely adopted across Indonesia, especially in the travel and tourism sector, with the rollout of the new MaiA travel assistant with Wonderful Indonesia, it’s not a stretch to foresee Seamless Corridors becoming the norm across airports in Indonesia and around the world.

Managers at Bali Airport have spoken to reporters this week about their continued mission to ensure that the terminals achieve a gold standard for aviation services. Earlier this year, Bali’s new autogate technology came fully online, reducing immigration check times for most tourists to a matter of seconds.

Speaking to reporters, the Acting General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Ibnu Solikin, shared, “Airport service is greatly influenced by the characteristics of its passengers. Therefore, we continue to improve with a passenger-centered approach. We implement development and renewal programs in a planned and measured manner to have a relevant impact on improving service quality.”

As Indonesia Immigration continues to level up its services through the All Indonesia program, Bali tourists landing directly in Bali and those with layovers in other Indonesian cities will continuously find improvements being made to both immigration services and airport experience.

All travellers arriving in Indonesia, including those landing in Bali, must now download and complete the digital arrivals card and customs forms via the All Indonesia app prior to arrival. The All Indonesia app was formally launched in October.

Speaking to reporters at the time, Indonesia’s Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, shared, “What is expected is that it can make it easier, make it more comfortable, make it more efficient, shorten the time for those two to travel abroad to Indonesia. Whether they are an Indonesian citizen or a foreign citizen.”

He added, “This system integrates functions from customs and excise, health, and quarantine to animal needs, including fishing and its products that enter Indonesia.”

Noting “We hope that anyone who enters Indonesia feels more confident and comfortable. Including investors and all who want to come to Indonesia to have a good experience, positive impression, and then be able to tell others to come back to Indonesia.”
