Improvements At Bali’s Kuta Beach Could Disrupt Visits This Week

Kuta Beach in Bali welcomes a huge amount of repair work to its beach walk and pavement areas after coastal erosion has destroyed long stretches of the public walkways.

The local government had been waiting for high tides to recede before commencing work, and teams have started the repair work this week.

The repair work along the beachfront in Kuta started on Saturday, 18th January, and is anticipated to continue throughout the week. The mission has been made harder for construction teams since more storms and high waves battered the beach on Sunday, 19th January.

Speaking to reporters, the Head of Water Resources at the Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR) in Badung Regency, Anak Agung Rama Putra, explained that the construction teams will be repairing the beachwalk pavement by using the same methods as originally implemented and will be installing geobags along the route.

Putra noted, “[Saturday], we lowered the concrete on the pedestrian first, then at 15.00 WITA, the water rose again. So, [on Monday], we continued installing retaining bamboo planted one meter deep, and then we filled it with geobag and sand lining before repairing the walkway. With this method, the appearance of the pedestrian still looks natural and aesthetic.”

He confirmed, “The work should have been completed [by Tuesday], but it was hampered by natural conditions.” Over 500 geobags will be installed along a 12-metre stretch of the coast, and the last report suggests that there were at least 3 meters still to go, reliant on there being no further high waves or storms this week.

Putra praised the community effort in fixing the pedestrian access route along Kuta Beach and was grateful for the support of beach traders who jumped into action to help make the beach area both safe again and more aesthetically pleasing for visitors.

Putra shared, “They feel responsible because they get their livelihood from Kuta Beach, so they help with the repairs. They were deployed by the beach management.”

He confirmed that his teams would continue to work until the job was completed to a high start, Putra concluded, “We do not want to let this condition damage the tourism image of Badung Regency.”

Tourism operators in the Kuta Beach area have their fingers crossed that the repair work can be completed without any further disruptions. But Bali is bracing for more incoming bad weather as the monsoon season reaches its peak.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency for Balihase issued early weather warnings for high waves of up to 4m in height and strong winds of up to 30 knots in the waters surrounding Bali from 20th January through to 23rd when a renewed forecast will be published.

Specifically between the 22nd and 23rd of January, along the southern coast of the island, fierce west-northwesterly winds are expected to reach up to 30 knots, bringing with them high waves and potentially increasing beach abrasion.

Over the next few months, more beach conservation work will be carried out along Kuta Beach to help protect the famous stretch of coastlines from further erosion.

As confirmed in November 2024, the Bali-Penida River Basin Center (BWS), the Kuta Traditional Village, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will be working in partnership to construct new breakwaters to help reduce the number of abrasion experiences along the beach, and in turn, protect the long stretch of sand for public use, and as vital habitat for nesting turtles.

The work will be a steady effort over the next 18 months, with each phase of the project being signed off and funded in turn.

Despite its issues with erosion, Kuta Beach remains one of the most popular coastal vacation destinations in Bali.

Home to an exceptional selection of hotels, international eateries, and plenty of activities for all the family, Kuta is proving that in 2025, it will remain a timeless classic beach vacation hotspot, and these renovation and conservation works will secure its position for many more years to come.
