A 61-year-old man named Karl Gunther Meyer from Germany has been arrested in Bali after 9 years on the run.
The Public Relations of Buleleng State Attorney, AA Jayalantara confirmed that the suspect who had been sentenced for a fraud case in 2012 but then fled detention 9 years ago has been arrested.
“The suspect finally surrender to authorities on Monday after being a fugitive for over 9 years since he was sentenced.” Jayalantara said.
Jayalantara explained that the suspect managed to escape the detention period after the authorities changed the jail time into being not able to leave the city, resulting in his escape from Bali.
“The suspect was sentenced for fraud. Foreign national Michael Brag who was the victim lost around USD $642,000 (IDR 9,3 billion). After years of searching for the suspect, the authorities were informed that Karl had come back to Indonesia and was staying in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara”
“We were informed that the suspect came to Mataram, Lombok recently to stay with his child. When we arrived at his house in Lombok on Sunday afternoon (1/8), he already left the house and went to Bali with a cargo truck through Padangbai Port.” Jayalantara added.
The suspect finally decided to surrender, and came to the State Attorney office after authorities closed street, making it impossible for him to leave the island.
“The suspect came to the State Attorney with his driver and let himself to get arrested and face an imprisonment in accordance to the Indonesian constitution to be held responsible of what he has done.” Jayalantara concluded.

A foreigner stealing from another foreigner. Classic!! People believe that while traveling or reside abroad to be very cautious with the locals. Well the closest expats you may have befriended could also deceive you.

@Randy, $642.000 is probably a dodgy business deal gone south, not a big wad of cash he embezzled... I mean, in rupiah you'd need a truck to move it ;)
I mean, there are certainly local pickpockets and such, that's what people are afraid of, getting their phones/wallets stolen.
