The Center for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics in Bali has confirmed that the last two days have seen maximum temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius.

These sky-high temperatures officially tip Bali’s heat into the extreme weather category, and along with extreme weather warnings and cautions for dangerous waves across the province, tourists must keep their wits about them.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, 6th February, the Head of the BBMKG Meteorology Operational Working Group for Denpasar, Wayan Musteana, explained, “Two stations recorded in the extreme temperature category.”

She revealed that the BMKG Geophysical Station in Sanglah, Denpasar City recorded record-breaking temperatures this week, reaching a maximum of 36 degrees Celsius.

They further explained that based on the data averages for the air temperature in February in the last 30 years in 1990-2020 at the Sanglah Geophysics Station, the maximum recorded temperatures were a comparatively low 32.5 degrees.

The second set of record-breaking temperatures was recorded at the Climatology Station in the State, Jembrana Regency, which reached 31.3 degrees Celsius.

Musteana referred to the Regulation of the Head of BMKG Number 9 of 2010 regarding Standard Operational Procedures for the Implementation of Early Warning, Reporting, and Dissemination of Extreme Weather Informatio,n which states that if the air temperature conditions reach 30 degrees or more, or reach above the normal average temperatures recorded at the local station, then an extreme weather status is declared.

Speaking at the same press conference, Wulan Wandarana from the Center for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BBMKG) Region III Denpasar explained, “In the Bali area right now it feels hot, indeed recorded at several BMKG stations in Bali, for the maximum temperature reaching 36 degrees Celsius. And it is indeed felt quite hot and has an impact on the community.”

She added, “During the rainy season, usually a lot of clouds cover the sunlight. However, there are certain times when rain does not fall, so that the accumulation of cloud mass is reduced. As a result, sunlight directly reaches the earth’s surface, making the air temperature feel hotter.”

Wandarana revealed that these hot temperatures are predicted to continue for the next few days and that the intensity of the rainfall will decrease.

Tourists are advised to keep up to date with the latest weather forecasts via weather apps and check in with any extreme weather warnings published by the Center for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics on their Instagram account.

Tourists are also advised to be mindful of high tides and high waves along Bali’s coastlines over the next week. Video footage from Canggu’s Echo Beach, recorded on the afternoon of Thursday, 6th February, shows tourists, surfers, and surf school staff scrambling to safe board, tables, and umbrellas as 8-foot waves crashed in against the shoreline.

While no one was injured, the sudden turn of events and intensity of the waves is a timely reminder for beach-goers to always stay alert and be quick to respond to the changing weather conditions and the changing conditions of the sea.

With extra high temperatures set to hit Bali’s most popular tourism resorts in the coming days, tourists are also advised to prioritize sun safety.

Hydration is key, as is taking plenty of time in the shade to avoid sunburn and overheating. Heatstroke can develop quickly, even for those who have not been in direct sun.

Advice from the Mayo Clinic suggests that if a person is experiencing heat immediate emergency medical help must be sought. The person experiencing heat stroke must be moved into the shade or indoors.

Excess clothing should be removed, and the medical website suggests that carers must “Cool the person with whatever means available — put in a cool tub of water or a cool shower, spray with a garden hose, sponge with cool water, fan while misting with cool water, or place ice packs or cold, wet towels on the person’s head, neck, armpits and groin” while waiting for emergency support to arrive.
