Entry Prices Are Set To Rise At This Popular Tourist Destination In Bali

It has to be said that the cost of just about everything is increasing, and tourism experiences in Bali are no exception.

In 2024 one of the island’s leading tourism attractions will be increasing the price of entry tickets. While the increase is nominal for many people, it’s got tourists asking questions about the rising costs of a vacation in Bali more broadly. 

The iconic Tanah Lot Temple is not only one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bali but also one of the most spiritually significant sites for Balinese Hindus.

The temple, set out on a rocky outcrop on the southern coast of the island, marks the spot where the land meets the sea.

In fact, that’s how the temple got its name. Tanah means ‘land or earth and Lot (laut) means sea.

Tanah Lot Temple is one of a series of seven oceanside temples along the Balinese coast. Each of the temples was built within the eyeline of the next, in turn forming a chain along the south-western stretch of the coast.

It is believed the venomous sea snakes guard the base of the island rock, helping to guard the temple from evil spirits.

A visit to Tanah Lot Temple is an essential cultural experience to add to any vacation in Bali. In 2024, entry tickets to the temple for both locals and foreigners are set to rise.

As leaders work to preserve the ancient temple more funds are needed to manage the site long term.

Tanah Lot’s Tourism Manager, Wayan Sudiana, told reporters that the price increase is necessary.

While it is not a position management teams want to be in, they have promised the price increase will also reflect an improvement in service and tourist experience. 

Sudiana said, “We, Tanah Lot management, are committed to continuing to provide the best and most memorable service for all who come to travel.”

He continued, “In preparation for next year’s ticket adjustments, we also continue to carry out outreach through tour guides, social media, and partners.“

As of 2024, adult international entry tickets to Tanah Lot Temple will increase from IDR 60,000 to IDR 75,000, and children’s tickets will increase from IDR 30,000 to IDR 40,000.

These increases may seem small, but with other Bali-related travel costs slowly increasing too, from paid-for visas on arrivals and next year’s tourism tax, the news that key attractions are also upping their prices may be enough to make tourists start looking elsewhere. 

Some people feel that maybe that is what the government, immigration, and tourism leaders in Bali want.

For months, leaders have been talking to the media about the need to stamp out badly-behaved tourists on the island and by working to attract what they are defining as high-spending and high-quality tourists. 

Earlier in the year, it was confirmed by immigration officials that visa-free travel for international travelers from countries like Australia, New Zealand, the USA, and most of Europe will not be returning any time soon.

Before the pandemic, the majority of travelers from countries in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand could visit Indonesia for up to 30 days for free. 

It is now the case that citizens from 92 countries are welcome to visit Indonesia for up to 30 days but must enter the country on visa-on-arrival, which costs IDR 500,000 per person.

While many tourists are happy to pay the visa-on-arrival fee, for many Bali lovers who return to the island every year for a family vacation, the fees were enough to start them thinking about other similar destinations where a visa-on-arrival is free, like in Thailand for example. 

In addition to the IDR 500,000 fee, as of early 2024, international tourists visiting Bali will be required to pay an IDR 150,000 tourism tax.

The fee, applicable to both adults and children, will be used to help preserve and promote Balinese culture and the environment, according to Bali’s Governor Wayan Koster.

However, some leaders are calling for a more specific breakdown of how funds will be spent before the tax is formally introduced.
