Bali’s Village Above The Clouds Wows Tourists With Sunrise Vistas

Tourists traveling to Bali are always on the lookout for something unique.

While no two trips to Bali are ever the same, there are some places where tourists can go to experience a different view of the island, and it’s always worth going the extra mile.

Sunrise View Over Kintamani Pinggin Village in Bali Mount Batur

In terms of spectacular sunrises, tourists visiting Bali are truly spoilt for choice. From Sanur to Amed and even way up north in Lovina, there are sunrise vistas for days. One of the most famous sunrise spots in Bali can be found at the summit of Mount Batur.

Every morning, 364 days a year (except on Nyepi Day), tourists can be found hiking the trail to the summit of Mount Batur, under the cover of darkness and accompanied by their guides, to be at the peak for the moment the sun first peaks over the horizon.

Similarly, the sunrise view from the summit of Mount Agung has to be one of the most magical and rewarding experiences a tourist can encounter in Bali. Don’t be fooled, though, just because hiking to the peak of Mount Batur or Mount Agung sits high on every traveler’s Bali bucket list, it does not mean these treks are easy.

Far from it, in fact, scaling Bali’s sacred peaks involves treacherous and technically challenging terrain that should only be attempted with the support of a registered local guide, and with the correct equipment at hand.

For those who want to experience the spectacular Kintamani sunrise without the 2 a.m. wake-up call and uphill trek, there are still options available. Pinggin Village is renowned for its breathtaking sunrise views. As famous as it is, it seems that Pinggin Village still falls outside the well-trodden path for international tourists in Bali.

Loved by locals and domestic tourists, Pinggin Village should be featured on more itineraries for international tourists who want to soak up the magical sunrise vibes without breaking a sweat on the peaks.

Pinggin Village is known as The Land Above The Clouds, and for good reason. Sitting at a high elevation, Pinggin Village is often shrouded in cool clouds and is home to a number of stunning viewpoints that sit just meters above the normal cloud level.

Arriving moments before sunrise, tourists can enjoy watching the clouds dance over the village, as the mist makes way for the sun to rise, visitors are rewarded with next-level views.

It’s easy to think that everywhere in Bali is balmy or hot 100% of the time, but it’s simply not the case. In high elevation areas such as Kintamani and Bedugul, the air is cool and crisp. You don’t need to be at the peak of Mount Batur or Mount Agung to get goosebumps.

In Pinggin Village and many communities around Kintamani, the average temperature ranges from 16 to 18 degrees. Still pretty warm in the heat of the day, but nothing compared to the temperatures in the late 20s and 30s often recorded down in Canggu, Seminyak, or Uluwatu. All this is to say, don’t forget your jacket or hoodie!

The best time to arrive in Pinggin Village is between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., depending on the season. It is best to check a weather app for the exact time of the sunrise during your visit.

The earlier the better, especially in high season. The viewpoints around Pinggin Village rarely encounter large crowds, but you do want to get the best seat in the house!

If an early morning drive from Ubud or the southern coast doesn’t sound appealing, then be sure to check out the accommodation options in Pinggin Village and around Kintamani more broadly.

There are some gorgeous family-run and locally owned guesthouses, private villas, and luxury glamping resorts that are increasingly popular in Kintamani. In fact, many of the glamping spots in and around Pinggin Village offer not only sunrise views directly from your bed, but also uninterrupted views of Mount Batur too.
