Bali’s Southernmost Beaches Are Tourist Favorites Right Now

The Bukit Peninsula in Bali is home to many of the island’s most dramatic and beautiful beaches. Famed for resorts like Uluwatu and Nusa Dua, the Bukit Peninsula is truly the jewel of the island.

The southernmost beaches that sit within the Kutuh area of the peninsula are booming in popularity right now, and it’s easy to see why. 

For many first-time visitors to Bali, the resort of Uluwatu is considered to encompass almost all of the Bukit Peninsula, from just south of Jimbaran Beach all the way through to where Nusa Dua begins.

The villages of Uluwatu, Pecatu, Ungasan, and Kutuh have, for most international tourists, been lumped together under the umbrella of Uluwatu. But, Kutuh Village in particular is making a name for itself in its own right.

Kutuh Village is an increasingly popular beach resort in the very south of Bali. Home to beaches like Pandawa and Batu Barak, the village is welcoming tens of thousands of visits every month.

One of the busiest beaches in the area right now is Gunung Payung Beach, which is the destination of choice for both domestic and intentional visitors. 

The Acting Temporary Manager of Gunung Payung Beach, I Putu Gede Surya Diarta, told reporters that the coastal retreat has seen a 20% increase in average daily visitors throughout the year today. Diarta explained that in August alone, the beach welcomed over 15,000 tourists.

With popularity rising and with the Christmas and New Year holiday season just around the corner, Diarta and his teams are keen to ensure that the beach maintains its appeal for visits.

He said that they will be providing more shuttle services down to the beach itself and ensuring that there are plenty of sub loungers and umbrellas available for rent.

Gunung Payung Beach offers tourists the best of both worlds on the Bukit Peninsula. The soft white expanse of sand backs onto a rugged cliffside, and the waves that lap against the shore are not as ferocious as the breaks further west.

Bringing together the best of Uluwatu and Nusa Dua, Gunung Payung Beach should be high on tourists’ list of must-visit destinations on the Bukit Peninsula.

As is the case with many up-and-coming destinations in Bali, Gunung Payung Beach has long been the secret spot of locals and domestic tourists.

Now, more international visitors are discovering the hidden gem as they search for a spot to avoid the busy crowds. 

The hidden cave at Gunung Payung Beach is a genuine hidden gem. The cave at Green Bowl Beach, to the west, is a popular photo spot, as is the little cave on Pantai Selatan Gau Banjar by Sundays Beach Club.

To access the hidden cave, beach lovers must walk along the beach heading west and walk around the cliff to discover the untouched patch of beach and secret cave. 

It is not only Gunung Payung Beach in Kutuh that is getting plenty of attention right now.

Pandawa Beach is about to receive a huge injection of government funding to keep the destination maintained and able to support increasing influxes of visitors. 

The Regent of Badung, I Nyoman Giri Prasta, has committed IDR 50 billion of the 2024 annual budget to improve facilities for tourists at Pandawa Beach.

As tourists continue to look to up-and-coming destinations across the Bukit Peninsula rather than classic resorts like Kuta, the government is working to ensure that the small coastal villages are able to keep up with demand. 

The funds will be used to improve the parking and entrance areas at the beach, as well as construct a children’s play area and create a new zoning management system to ensure that beach lovers get the very best of their time on the coast.
